Overview
SRI's Ocean Modeling Lab develops innovative solutions for environmental characterization in the ocean, nearshore, and riverine domains.
Our work provides information for mission planning in complex ocean environments and enhanced understanding of environmental effects on maritime operations.
Lab capabilities include :
Algorithm development for extreme compression of environmental data
- High-resolution ocean and atmospheric modeling and wave prediction
- Data assimilation and related sensor modeling for ocean tides, circulation, winds, and waves
- River characterization and bathymetry estimation from remote sensing data
- Computational fluid dynamics and multi-body dynamics for novel marine vehicles
- User interface development for modeling and assimilation systems
We are looking for a Research Engineer or Scientist to work as part of an interdisciplinary team on ocean modeling and exploitation of sensor data in an oceanographic context.
This position will be on site in Ann Arbor, MI with flexibility for a hybrid work schedule, 2 days on site and 3 days working from a home office.
Responsibilities
Areas of focus will include ocean modeling and data assimilation for ocean circulation, winds, and waves. Responsibilities will include algorithm and code development and maintenance, setup and execution of computational models and algorithms, and analysis of results.
Additional responsibilities will include participation in client interaction and preparation of proposals, as well as preparation of technical articles, reports, and oral presentations.
Qualifications
Requires a PhD or MS in Oceanography, Geophysics, Applied Math, Physics, or Engineering (e.g. ME, Civil, Aero) with 0-5 years of experience.
Candidates with more extensive experience that is well aligned with the job responsibilities will also be considered.
- Experience with the Linux operating system, Matlab, and Python is required.
- U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required. An Active SECRET clearance desired.
- Demonstrated background in numerical analysis, especially fluid dynamics.
- Programming in FORTRAN, C++, and / or Rust is desirable.
- Machine learning experience is desirable.
- Demonstrated analytical skills are a must, as is a willingness to work on problems at the boundaries between traditional disciplines.
The salary range is : $85,800-$163,015. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles.
Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
