We are looking for a PRN Surgical Technician (Certified or Non-Certified) staff to join our Surgery department. This is an as needed position to assist with fill in for vacations and busy days.

Hours vary according to need 630 am -700 pm, and occasional on-call shifts as needed.

Under the supervision of licensed perioperative team member provides patient care in the operative setting. Provides technical services and support for patients undergoing surgical procedures including scrubbing and circulating roles.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence / Patient Care

Utilizes critical thinking in performance of job duties and maintains responsibility relating to surgical technology.

Coordinates activities with registered nurses and other coworkers in planning and implementing care within hospital policies and legal limitations.

Prepares the operating room for the arrival of surgical patients, assembles equipment, supplies, and instruments for surgical procedures according to preference cards and type of procedure.

Assists the circulating nurse with patient care activities including transporting patient, surgical scrub prep, positioning, application of cautery ground pad, and tourniquet cuff.

Performs urinary bladder catheterizations under the supervision of the circulating nurse.

Responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field. Uses aseptic technique to arrange instruments and supplies.

Performs instrument, sponge, and sharp counts.

Demonstrates correct technique in handling of instruments, sutures, specimens, and medications.

Consistently delivers high quality care demonstrating surgical technology knowledge and skills in the operating room in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care.

Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.

Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment.

Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych / social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.

Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service.

Balances team and individual responsibilities, objective and open to other’s views, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to positive team goals, puts success of team above own interest.

Assists with OR room turnover including opening sterile supplies and instruments.

Performs routine cleaning on equipment.

Ability to train new Surgical Technicians to their role.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

Practices and reflects knowledge of AORN, AAMI, HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal / state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

Completes all annual education and competency requirements within designated time frame.

Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.

Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System.

Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.

Qualifications

Education :

Successful completion of a surgical tech program from an accredited college.

Experience :

Previous surgical technician experience

License(s) / Certification(s) :

Surgical tech certification

Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Microsoft Office basic computer skills.

Customer / patient focused.

Other :

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
