Preparation Assistant (Gallery lighting focus) Part-Time
POSITION PURPOSE :
This role is primarily focused on the lighting responsibilities of the Exhibition Production team and works closely with the Manager of Exhibition Lighting as well as the Exhibition Preparation team.
Specifically, this role will install and set museum lighting that adheres to institutional and conservation standards and supports the successful realization of exhibition projects and gallery rotations across the museum campus.
This role may also assist with the following tasks related to the execution of exhibitions and gallery rotations : preparation, crating, packing, framing, demolition, drywall, build-out, painting, cabinetry, wiring, electrical work and installing graphics as well as other projects throughout the Exhibition and Collection Services (ECS) Division and the museum campus as needed.

This position reports to : Manager of Exhibition Lighting
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Assists with exhibition lighting needs and burnout replacements for all gallery spaces across the Museum campus.
- Installs lighting fixtures, lamps, lenses, gels, GOBO's and other lighting accessories.
- Aims, focuses and frames the lighting on the artworks.
- Sets gallery lighting for both environmental and atmospheric purposes.
- Adheres to Museum standards, stewardship and conservation guidelines to set the appropriate light levels on artworks.
- Works with lighting designers and contractors as needed. Assists with maintaining inventory, packing, storage, movement and maintenance of Museum's stock of lighting fixtures and equipment, exhibition furniture, cabinetry and related props.
- Assists with all aspects of rotation activities in museum galleries and works closely with other areas of ECS to ensure a seamless and efficient implementation process.
- May assist with wall construction, gallery patching and painting, gallery maintenance and other build-out and art installation activities as needed in preparation for an exhibition or gallery rotation.
- May assist with fabricating, modifying and maintaining exhibition cabinetry and pedestals.
- May assist in supporting other Exhibitions and Collections Services departments including Collections Management, Registration, Conservation and Photography on various projects as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Consistent usage of the Racial Equity Lens in day-to-day operations.
- Yearly goal setting to support Racial Equity Roadmap initiatives .
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, etc.) :
- Knowledge of museum lighting practices and application.
- Skilled in using museum equipment such as lifts, ladders, etc.
- Ability to work independently or with a team.
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively and constructively within a team framework.
- Good reasoning and problem-solving ability.
- Knowledge of museum exhibition processes and art handling practices preferred.
- Use of hand tools and some power tools required.
- Knowledge of work safety practices and issues.
- Skilled in establishing priorities and coordinating work activities.
- Ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to find creative solutions in a flexible manner.
- Ability to work with a wide range of disciplines and interests.
- Ability to understand and work within institutional priorities.

Position type : This position may be covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with AFSCME-CWU .
Pay : The hiring hourly range for the position is $19.00-$23.75 based on experience.
