Job Duties
Contributes to the public safety mission of the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) by coordinating the Agency’s legislative programs and processes.
Supports Executive Leadership team and agency staff by working with Legislators, other agencies, and key stakeholders.
Serves as the Legislative Liaison for the Virginia Department of Corrections working with
and testifying before legislative committees, preparing agency responses to legislators and stakeholder inquiries, and preparing agency studies and reports.
Gathers data, analyzes, coordinates, and prepares agency study reports. Performs research, interprets complex information, draws conclusions, and creates reports for presentation and dissemination.
Cultivates and maintains professional and effective working relationships with appointed officials, legislators, staff, and key stakeholders on behalf of the DOC.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience gathering data, analyzing, coordinating, and preparing agency study reports. Experience researching, interpreting complex information, draws conclusions, and creates reports for presentation and dissemination.
Experience managing multiple projects and priorities producing high quality work and meeting established deadlines. knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s legislative process including the operations and processes of legislative committees.
Comprehensive knowledge of state government organization and operations including legislative and executive branch interactions and relationships among agencies.
Working knowledge of the criminal justice system and the use of performance measures in state government. Demonstrated ability to write technical reports and respond to draft reports from agency studies and reviews.
Skill in Microsoft Office products. Ability to effectively communicate through written communication and oral presentations.
Ability to review and interpret regulations and statutes applicable to Public Safety and Corrections. Ability to model the values of the DOC.
Additional Considerations
Experience with the LIS system. Experience working with executive management providing legislative guidance in support of agency initiatives.
Experience in a professional work environment researching, analyzing, and developing recommendations. Experience making presentations to executives, legislators, and other key stakeholders.
Experience working with Virginia General Assembly legislation and databases.
