The Anoka County Attorney's Office offers law students a unique opportunity to expand their legal knowledge while performing meaningful and challenging work on a wide variety of cases.

We are looking for law clerks to join the Criminal, Juvenile, and Civil Divisions, now or in the Spring semester. A typical clerkship lasts one to two years.

Law Clerks conduct legal research, draft memoranda for attorneys, and handle a variety of court hearing in District Court, appearing on bail calendars for the Criminal Division and on Detention, Delinquency, Juvenile Petty Offense, and Truancy calendars for the Juvenile Division.

Law Clerks will have the opportunity to handle more complex matters as they gain skills and experience. Law Clerks in the Criminal and Juvenile Divisions perform duties like those of an entry level attorney, such as drafting Complaints and delinquency petitions, and reviewing information submitted by law enforcement to determine what, if any, charges are appropriate.

Law Clerks in the Civil Division typically work primarily on appellate cases and research projects at the direction of the division's attorneys.

This is a temporary, non-exempt position with some remote work available.

Work Location

This position will work at the Anoka County Government Center located at 2100 3rd Ave, Anoka, MN 55303.

This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work, with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

Typical business hours are Monday - Friday 8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m. Your expected hours will be reviewed with you by your supervisor.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of a Law Clerk in the Anoka County Attorney's Office.

Coordinate legal efforts for attorneys.

Write and review legal documents.

Maintain legal documentation database.

Schedule meetings and legal clinics. Ensure necessary materials are prepared beforehand.

Conduct legal research and pulls cases.

Proofread and cite-check briefs and other materials.

Assist with preparation and filing of court papers, depositions, interviews, hearings, and client meetings.

Organize and maintain physical and digital case files.

Provide leadership, coaching, and / or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

Must be a current student in good standing at an accredited law school.

Must be eligible for certification under Minnesota Supreme Court Student Practice Rules.

Successfully pass criminal history background check which includes fingerprinting.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Standard office environment.

Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment.

Occasional travel to other county work sites as needed. Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and / or a personal vehicle.

Anoka County has determined that successfully passing a pre-employment criminal / driving background check, drug screen and DOT physical, and / or other qualifications checks may be necessary for certain positions.

Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the County to obtain to conduct such screenings and / or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought.

Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
