About the YOLA Program :

A signature program from Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, YOLA provides transformational and equitable access to music education for young people from marginalized communities, supporting their personal development and their communities.

Now serving close to 1,700 young musicians across five sites, YOLA provides free instruments, intensive music instruction (up to 18 hours per week), academic support, and leadership training.

Position Summary :

The Associate Operations Director is an essential position with the YOLA program that oversees all YOLA program operations, personnel, and business management of YOLA program partnerships.

Ensuring the operational success and progress of the YOLA program, the Associate Operations Director oversees and strategizes the essential functions of program operations including : adherence to standard operating procedures, inventory and data management, hiring and onboarding, and payroll oversight.

The position supervises the instrument and data team for the YOLA program and collaborates with Program Managers in adherence and compliance with operational standards.

Scope of Work : Operational :

Operational :

  • Oversee all operational and personnel functions of YOLA site programming including but not limited to :
  • Assisting in building local site budgets
  • Support in overseeing YOLA site program design
  • Ensure alignment of operational functions across YOLA program sites in collaboration with site leadership and program partnerships
  • Oversee all program invoicing from partner programs
  • Oversee all payroll processes for YOLA Teaching Artists and part-time site staff

Management :

  • Manage and oversee development of onboarding practices for YOLA program team members
  • Supervise LA Phil YOLA Program Managers, specifically related to operations management
  • Oversee the hiring process and onboarding for Teaching Artists
  • Support in the hiring of program staff for YOLA sites, including partner programs

Strategic Development :

  • Work closely with key members of the Learning team to develop and implement systems and sound operational practices for each site
  • Support program expansion efforts and contribute to developing infrastructure for any new program and ensuring that it aligns with existing YOLA site programming
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Position Expectations :

  • The Associate Operations Director is expected to be an active and participatory member of the Learning team and engage with all major events for the department
  • The Associate Operations Director will have excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, strong sense of empathy and a proactive, curious nature
  • The Associate Operations Director will continuously look for ways to improve the operational logistics for YOLA and improve the experiences of important stakeholders, partners, families, and students
  • A love for and knowledge of music (orchestral and / or choral)
  • Previous administrative and self-governed project management experience
  • Experience working with budgets and budget management
  • Experience with operational oversight and large-scale systems management
  • Experience managing a team of people from different experience levels
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented approach to challenges
  • Strong commitment to youth development philosophy, equity, and social justice
  • Ability to prioritize workload, efficient and effective worker
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a self-directed way
  • Fluency in all Microsoft suites components and remote working tools (Slack, Google, Zoom, etc.)
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to work on a highly collaborative, intrinsically motivated team
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students
