Description

Designs, manages, implements and evaluates the clerkship in keeping with the overall school learning objectives, recommendations of the Year 3 Curriculum Committee or any of its standing subcommittees and relevant national recommendations directed to their subject matter.

Communicates the expectations of their clerkship to their students, staff, faculty and administration. Acts as a link between students and faculty, demonstrating interpersonal and leadership skills that earn the trust of both groups.

Provides operational support and daily supervision of the undergraduate teaching program. Creates and maintains all undergraduate evaluation systems.

Must remain informed of trends and practices in medical education, pedagogy, technology, and administration. Also engages in scholarly activities and assume leadership roles in educational endeavors.

Is responsible for developing and maintaining a vision for the short and long-term activity of their Clerkship. This effort entails ongoing development and planning, in consultation with their staff, faculty and the administration.

Develops, implements, and supports the educational research for the department of surgery. Responsible for development and administration of the Mock Page Program.

Participates in the Advanced Trauma Life Support course as an instructor. Provides daily support to the general surgery, colorectal, and trauma / critical care residency team as appropriate.

Examples of Duties

Administration

  • Develops and directs the daily implementation of the operational policies and procedures pertaining to the undergraduate teaching program in the Department of Surgery.
  • Maintains close contact with the Clerkship Director of the Department of Surgery regarding the operational policies and procedures of the undergraduate teaching program and specific educational needs that may develop.
  • Develops and schedules the educational activities for each clerkship.
  • Works closely with department faculty members in enhancing the educational experiences of the students in the surgical clerkship.
  • Develops and implements Standardized Patient cases for use in the training and evaluation of students and residents.
  • Designs, administers, and evaluates the medical student curriculum. Provides the annual response to student feedback for the third year curriculum committee.
  • Assists skills lab staff in administration of technical skills labs for medical students
  • Acts as liaison between the undergraduate and graduate surgical teaching service and the patient care services of the hospitals.

Works out solutions when individual.problems arise involving medical students and hospital personnel.

  • Collaborates with webmaster to design and maintain surgery clerkship information for department of surgery website.
  • Develops and administers the mock page curriculum for use in evaluating PGY1 resident's competency.
  • Develop and administers the curriculum for 4th year Resident Readiness Elective, which prepares students going into a surgery speciality for their PGY1 year.

Actively participates with the American College of Surgeons in maintaining the nation! curriculum.

  • Develops and maintains the teaching evaluation system using the Qualtrics Survey software platform.
  • Routinely reviews teaching evaluations and reports any issues immediately to the faculty or resident as well as the responsible program director or chair as necessary.
  • Provides teaching evaluation reports to all faculty, residents, program directors, program coordinators, division chiefs, and department chair.
  • Collects all teaching evaluations from medical students and residents. Develops a summary document that is used to determine teaching awards for the department of surgery on an annual basis.
  • Provides all student midterm evaluations. This requires at minimum the title of assistant clerkship director to meet the LCME standards.

Teaching

  • Designs, develops and presents orientation to the Surgery Clerkship for all 3rd year medical students.
  • Prepares and submits all clerkship and PEP student evaluations.
  • Participates actively in the Department of Surgery education committees.
  • Presents orientation to the surgery clerkship for all new residents and faculty.
  • Provides orientation to all new faculty regarding the undergraduate program.
  • Provides coaching to faculty regarding how to improve the effectiveness of their coaching of medical students.
  • Supports the administration of the ATLS course as needed by the surgery residency programs. Supports the administration of and provides instruction of the Stop the Bleed course provided to all third year medical students.
  • Assists in the development and administration of the Residents as Teachers course for surgical residents.

Research

  • Participates actively in the educational research projects within the Department of Surgery under the direction of the Director of Surgical Education and the Professor of Surgical Education Development and Research.
  • Designs, Implements, presents and publishes independent research projects pertaining to individual clinical and educational interests.
  • Mentors medical students and residents in designing, implementing and publishing surgical education research.

Service / Centralized Paging Program

  • Represents the Department of Surgery in relevant hospital and university matters.
  • Represents the Department of Surgery at national and statewide meetings.
  • Director of the Centralized Mock Page Program
  • Maintains a series of Mock Page scenarios using current evidenced based medical information. Sends the updated cases for multi-institutional faculty peer review.
  • Maintains contact with the American Colege of Surgeonsn (ACS) administrative staff and updates the Mock Page Curriculum for use in the ACS / APDS / ASE National Resident Preparedness Course.
  • Contacts all participating medical schools to provide explanation of the program that includes administering pages, providing individual student and institutional reports, payment process, and orientation materials.
  • Administers the mock pages to SIU students, as well as, students from outside institutions. This includes providing verbal and written feedback to each individual student.

This requires paging students in the evening, at night, and on weekends.

  • Develops and updates the position description for registered nurses hired for the mock page program.
  • Provides training and supervision of all staff.
  • Develops and maintains the program budget.
  • Prepares and sends invoices to participating institutions.
  • Collaborates with webmaster to design and update Mock Page Program website.

Qualifications

  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
  • Master's degree in education and / or nursing
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois
  • At least five (5) years of nursing experience, three (3) of which were in a hospital setting
