The School of Music at Purdue University Fort Wayne invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Applied Percussion, beginning August 2024.

Primary duties include teaching applied percussion, techniques and literature courses, percussion ensemble, and other chamber ensembles.

Recruitment for the percussion studio is a requirement of this position and secondary teaching duties may be assigned commensurate to School of Music needs based on the candidate’s qualifications.

These may include, but are not limited to, experience in commercial and jazz percussion, general music courses, or other areas.

Earned doctorate or ABD in percussion performance or related field is required. Applicants will have an established record of excellence as an educator and demonstrate a high level of artistry as a versatile performer.

Pedagogical knowledge and / or performance experience should include solo repertoire, concert ensembles, drum set, and world percussion.

Primary consideration will be given to candidates with a successful record of recruiting and teaching applied percussion at the collegiate level.

Candidates should demonstrate experience and / or potential for innovative pedagogy in preparing students to navigate the 21st century musical landscape.

In addition, the successful candidate will possess excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, and be committed to working in a collegial and collaborative environment.

The School of Music is committed to advancing diversity in all areas of faculty effort, including research, teaching, and service / engagement.

Candidates should address at least one of these areas in their cover letter, indicating past experiences and current interests or activities.

Screening of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled. All candidates who are interviewed will be asked to prepare a 45-60-minute instructional presentation along with other activities determined by the search committee.

Review of applications will begin on February 20, 2024, and the position will remain open until filled.

The School of Music is staffed by 26 full-time and 45 part-time faculty members. It enrolls 280 students in curricula leading to the Bachelor of Science in Popular Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Industry, Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy, Bachelor of Science in Music in an Outside Field, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Music Technology, Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Master of Music Therapy degrees.

The school is housed in the Purdue University Fort Wayne Music Center featuring state of the art performance and rehearsal facilities.

The school also offers the Sweetwater Music Center for its popular music and music industry degrees that features the latest in music industry technology and state of the art studio.

Faculty members enjoy collaborative relationships with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Children's Choir, Fort Wayne Community Band, Voices of Unity, and other community partners in campus residence.

The university is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts is composed of three departments : Art and Design, Theatre, as well as the School of Music.

More than 600 students majoring in the visual and performing arts receive instruction from a professional and academic staff that includes 32 full-time faculty, numerous associate faculty, and visiting artists.

The faculty of the College of Visual and Performing Arts are professionally active, recognized nationally and internationally within their fields, and frequently receive grant awards for their research and creative endeavors.

The students of the College of Visual and Performing Arts are regular award winners in regional and national competitions.

Internship programs are fostered for students as well as an active association with community business leaders and local projects.

The college is in three buildings on the Purdue Fort Wayne campus and one facility at Sweetwater. The Visual Arts Building (1991) houses the Department of Art and Design, and the Visual Arts Gallery where exhibitions include student shows and works by select visiting artists.

The Department of Theatre maintains the Ernest E. Williams Theatre (1993) and a recently renovated black box, Studio Theatre.

The Purdue University Fort Wayne Music Center (2007) includes a 1,500-seat auditorium for concerts and university events.

The PFWMusic Center is located next to Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building as part of an arts complex on the north side of campus.

The Sweetwater Music Center is located on the campus of this music industry leader and includes teaching, rehearsal, and collaborative spaces as well as a recording studio.
