Standardized Patient Program

Purpose :

A Standardized Patient (SP) is an individual who is carefully trained to portray or simulate all aspects of a real patient as part of a case scenario in order to provide an opportunity for a student to learn or be evaluated on their clinical skills.

SPs learn all aspects of a patient portrayal including the patient's appearance, demeanor, chief complaint, symptoms, past medical history, family history, and physical findings.

An SP is carefully trained to not only simulate a real patient in a scenario but also provides feedback to the students, especially in regard to their communication and interpersonal skills.

The purpose of using SPs is to give the students the opportunity to practice the communication, diagnostic, and examination skills in a clinical and safe environment which they will need before they begin their professional careers.

Essential Behaviors :

Reliable : Must be dependable to follow through with scheduled appointments, have the ability to complete an evaluation at the end of each session.

Consistency with medical history information shared in each student interview is needed. SP must be punctual. SP must demonstrate flexibility.

SP must demonstrate the ability to be instructed by Standardized Patient staff and consistently simulate case scenarios in a standardized, accurate and reliable manner.

Applicant must be willing to participate in videotaping of the interview for the student's educational needs.

Communication :

  • Demonstrate ability to carefully listen to others.
  • Receives ongoing feedback and modifies behaviors accordingly.
  • Express thoughts and ideas effectively.
  • Display and promote cross cultural sensitivity.

Applicant must have the ability to complete an evaluation at the end of each session, provide feedback on the student(s) at the end of the encounter either verbally, written checklist or computerized checklist.

Essential Duties :

  • Attends and participates in training activities in preparation to portray patient roles in staged settings.
  • Based on specific case studies, repeatedly portrays a patient consistently and accurately throughout staged medical encounters including, but not limited to the patient interview, physical or other non-invasive procedures as deemed necessary by the case.
  • Observe and document learner roles based on case requirements.
  • Evaluate the learner's verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Communicates availability for work, reports for work when scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications :

Appropriate education and / or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

  • Education : High school diploma / GED and the ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Requirement : Applicant must be willing to participate in videotaping of the interview for the student's educational needs.
  • Experience : Experience in acting helpful.
  • Certifications / Licenses : None

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to work cooperatively with learners, other SPs, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrate ability to be instructed by a Program Leader and / or Trainer and portray cases and / or teach and assess skills consistently.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments.
  • May need to fit certain age, gender, race, and ethnic attributes as the position dictates.
