Job Summary The Office of Safety and Security at Oberlin College and Conservatory invites applications for a CommunicationOfficer.
This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Assistant Director of Campus Safety. The hours forthis position may include nights, weekends, and overtime coverage as necessary.
Responsibilities The incumbent will be responsible for providing emergency and general public safety services. Essential Job Functions
- Greet visitors to the Campus Safety Office.
- Coordinate and perform all Office radio and telephone communications functions on assigned shifts
- Receive incoming telephone calls from the College community and the general public; evaluate callers’ needs, provide requested assistance / information, or make appropriate referrals to other Office staff or to other College offices.
- Receive, transmit, and coordinate radio and telephone messages to or from Campus Safety Office personnel and, when necessary, Facilities Operations, Conference Services, and other offices on the College Campus, along with local law enforcement and public safety agencies.
- Coordinate Safety and Security Office response to emergency situations with other College offices’ staff, law enforcement, and public safety agencies.
- Monitor comprehensive central alarm systems (fire safety, burglary / robbery detection, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, etc.
to determine conditions of system areas. Alert appropriate personnel when alarms sound or visual scan detects problems.
- Maintain an appropriate electronic or written log of all activities during assigned duty shifts, including radio, telephone, and general support activities.
- Complete various forms associated with reported security and safety discrepancies, work orders to the Facilities Operations Office, lost / found property, and crimes / incidents.
- Make appropriate notifications to other College offices, department staff members, or the College Community in emergencies or incidents involving exceptional or usual circumstances.
- Fulfill requirements of a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Jeanne Clery Act in relation to reporting crimes to law enforcement authorities.
Marginal Job Functions
- Perform all related Campus Safety services or emergency / general duties as requested by the Director, Assistant Director, Supervisor, or any other senior officer.
- Issue emergency / temporary identification cards, as necessary;
- Access various Blackboard computer software to delete lost or stolen identification card numbers; grant remote access to numerous doors on campus;
and other access control duties.
- Dispense those keys kept in the Office to students, faculty, and staff;
- Enter data into the records management system, file records;
- Issue parking permits to the Oberlin College community;
- Perform related communication and Campus Safety support duties as assigned.
- Required Qualifications Must be at least 19 years of age with a high school diploma or GED; excellent oral and written communication skills (a writing sample will be required during the interview process);
- Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate telephone protocol and procedures; work experience demonstrating the ability to perform critical tasks without direct supervision;
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to evaluate emergency situations and respond accordingly under pressure;
- Must be able to interact in a sensitive, courteous, and understanding way with members of a diverse residential and academic community, including students, faculty, staff, and the general public;
- Experience demonstrating the ability to handle several projects simultaneously and to maintain composure in emergency situations;
- Experience demonstrating the ability to work in a team setting to provide a safe and secure environment;
Must be able and willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, and overtime coverage as needed, including extracurricular campus events and favorable references.
