The One Health Institute (OHI) Grant Writer will generate high-quality scientific proposals, narratives, applications, and supporting documents in response to philanthropic, federal, state, and other solicitations consistent with all policies and procedures at CSU, and the requirements and guidelines of the funding agencies.

This position will write and prepare scientific grants with OHI and other leadership. Help lead the technical proposal creation team, meet with campus leadership, including Deans, Research Associate Deans, Institute Directors, Department Chairs, and key faculty leaders and staff to gather ideas and perspectives to create winning grants and contracts.

Facilitate the OHI in achieving the goals to implement the One Health approach in projects by writing and building multisectoral and multidisciplinary One Health proposals for philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations in conjunction with the Office of the Vice President for Researchs Advancement team.

Develop strategies and written scientific content to solicit large-scale funding from relevant organizations and individuals, and in response to notices of funding opportunities to solve complex problems through implementing the One Health approach, especially to secure federal and state funds for transdisciplinary proposals over $10M, in collaboration with the Research Acceleration Office when appropriate.

Responsible for curating content and collecting information from diverse sources, including campus leaders, and drafting and editing proposals, case statements, correspondence, and other written documents.

Participate in multidisciplinary workshops to gather ideas and details from a diverse set of disciplines and stakeholder communities.

Research and gather background information from public resources and technical documents. Distill information from disparate sources into cohesive and compelling proposals.

Develop proposals from concept to submission on tight timelines. Coordinate approval and timely dissemination of proposals and other fundraising documents.

Support project personnel to write timely progress reporting for grants and contracts to funders.

Create communications support materials, including templates, boilerplate language and other documents to be used by OHI in fundraising efforts.

Research and identify new government, corporate, foundation, and private funding prospects to match OHI priorities; Assist OHI in identifying and executing on funding opportunities in a nimble and time-sensitive manner, as many strategic opportunities do not have much advanced notice.

Attend team meetings, strategic convenings, and participate in discussions with program officers and donors, as appropriate. Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in a science related field.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in developing and managing multi-partner interdisciplinary research proposals.
  • Experience in developing and managing multi-partner interdisciplinary proposals for philanthropic support.
  • Experience supporting multi-step projects and in meeting multiple overlapping deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to speak to and work with people from a wide range of disciplines, as well as individuals from the Dean / Director level to new students and staff.
  • Strong demonstrated writing skills and ability to distill and communicate complex concepts and documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to craft compelling proposals for large-scale team research aimed at various sponsors, including federal and state agencies, industry partners, private foundations and donors, and others.
  • Skills to work in a team environment and on projects that involve input and feedback from multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and different disciplinary languages.
  • Familiarity with academic, scientific, and / or technical subjects and a demonstrated ability to translate these into persuasive proposals and cases for support.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of writing major contract and grant proposals for team research.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD in science or related field
  • Understanding of and experience in the environment of private fundraising at a major public institution.
  • Proven ability to turn institutional objectives and messages into compelling proposals
  • Demonstrated capacity to adapt to evolving priorities and goals and produce quality materials under tight timelines, while juggling concurrent priorities in a complex, decentralized environment.
  • Experience working with page layout software such as InDesign.
  • Proficiency with computer Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and data base skills.
  • Excellent research, grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge and skills related to university fundraising.
  • Knowledge and skills related to grant writing.
  • Demonstration of high ethical standards and confidentiality with ability to exercise good judgment on behalf of the OHI

Essential Duties Job Duty Category Proposal Writing and Development Duty / Responsibility

  • Write and develop scientific grant proposals that effectively communicate the teams goals, objectives, and strategies to potential funders.
  • Research and identify potential grant opportunities that align with OHIs mission and goals.
  • Review and interpret proposal announcements to ensure proposals meet unique sponsor guidelines for multiple funding mechanisms including grants, contracts, task orders, or cooperative agreements.
  • Advise faculty members on requirements for proposal. Establish timeline to meet critical deadlines especially for collaborative proposals or proposals with sub recipients.

Prioritize proposal workload as needed.

  • Liaison with other CSU departments or colleges and with non- CSU partners (including prime recipients and sub recipients) on collaborative proposals.
  • Use OMB Uniform Guidance and CSU policies and procedures for proposal development. Requires professional knowledge of effort requirements, fringe rates, travel limitations, tuition rates, allowable expenses, service agreements, capital assets, subcontracts, indirect cost (IDC) rates, and cost share.
  • Advise faculty on the availability and costs of core facilities and other campus resources.
  • Understand ramifications of proposal type on Small Business Administration requirements and the identification of post-award vendors meeting those qualifications
  • Create Kuali Research proposal document for university review and approval. Observe and adhere to OSP and sponsor deadlines with the understanding that late proposals result in automatic rejection.
  • Create proposal submission records for specific federal sponsor submission portals.
