Job Description

San Bernardino Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly adjunct positions for our two college campuses (San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College) on a continuous basis.

However, this does not imply the department is actively recruiting for this position. If there is an interest and / or need within the specific department, applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be contacted by respective department deans and / or faculty chairs.

We are seeking individuals to join our Nursing Department team that are fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education in a collegial and collaborative student-centered environment.

The Registered Nurse (RN) Adjunct will have responsibility for instruction in theory, skills lab, or clinical portions of the nursing curriculum.

The RN Adjunct is supervised by the RN Program Director.

This posting is to establish a pool of qualified applicants positions as Adjunct - RN, Adjunct.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Delivers instruction for both theoretical and clinical nursing courses.
  • Employs a diverse range of teaching methods, including lectures, case studies, videos, demonstrations, small group discussions, worksheets, student presentations, role-playing, patient care simulations, and guest speakers, etc.
  • Incorporates teaching principles that are specifically tailored to the needs and characteristics of adult learners.
  • Evaluates and analyzes students' mastery of course and program learning outcomes.
  • Actively participates in discussions on outcomes at the campus, program, and institutional levels.
  • Integrates psychosocial needs into the planning and delivery of nursing care.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in essential information technology functions, including but not limited to, utilizing electronic health records (EHR) systems, documenting clinical activities, accessing educational and clinical resources, and effectively using other relevant academic and healthcare software.
  • Takes responsibility for overseeing RN program students within clinical facilities.
  • Communicates clinical expectations to students as outlined in the RN Student Handbook.
  • Coordinates student placement and clarifies expectations with the Clinical Placement Specialist.
  • Assigns patients and students to align theory objectives with both student learning and patient care needs.
  • Guides students to resources necessary for clinical preparation.
  • Assesses student knowledge and skill levels to ensure supervision of skills that promote safety and optimal patient care.
  • Collaborates with Lead Faculty to develop a plan for effectively observing, instructing, and evaluating students.
  • Facilitates post-conference sessions for students to share and reflect on their learning experiences.
  • Aligns weekly theory content with clinical objectives and experiences.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on nursing care plans in a timely manner using an electronic Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Delivers immediate feedback on clinical performance following observations, as well as during mid-term and end-of-term evaluations.
  • Works variable shifts and may commute to adjacent counties for clinical experiences
  • Documents student observations utilizing narrative notes and designated program forms.
  • The RN Adjunct supervises student conduct in the classroom, lab and at clinical sites.

Provides impactful academic guidance and support.

  • Delivers feedback to students in a confidential setting.
  • Recognizes verbal and nonverbal cues that suggest a need for student guidance.
  • Maintains a nonjudgmental and supportive approach when guiding students.
  • Encourages students to utilize problem-solving techniques to identify potential courses of action.
  • Refers students with unresolved issues to the RN Program Director.
  • Sets office hours or schedules appointments at times convenient for students.
  • Validated Clinical Competence : The RN Adjunct must possess and exercise the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff-level registered nurses of the clinical unit or nursing area to which the RN Adjunct is assigned.

In collaboration with tenure track faculty :

  • Provides suggestions throughout the program to enhance curriculum content and flow.
  • Collaborates with fellow faculty members on curriculum evaluation and revision strategies.
  • Incorporates ideas from other RN programs during curriculum evaluation and revision processes.
  • Ensures consistency with regulations approved by the BRN.
  • Engages in planning program theory and clinical courses, skills labs, and other related activities.
  • Organizes and delivers instruction aligned with course and program objectives.
  • Implements theory and clinical objectives in accordance with the curriculum plan.
  • Assesses personal and program effectiveness in helping students achieve course and program outcomes.
  • Contributes to the development and refinement of program policies and procedures.
  • Employs open communication and problem-solving techniques to address and resolve conflicts.
  • Identifies and pursues opportunities to meet student needs and support program goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

In accordance with the State Chancellor's Minimum Qualifications Guide-

  • Any bachelor's degree or higher and
  • Two (2) years of professional experience, or
  • Any associate degree and six (6) years of professional experience.
  • Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree.
  • Valid California Drivers License.

Alongside the State Chancellor's Minimum Qualifications guide and in compliance with the California Board of Registered Nursing, the following qualifications are required :

  • Minimum of one (1) year continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a Registered Nurse in the designated nursing area within the previous five years OR
  • One (1) academic year of Registered Nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency.
  • The RN Adjunct must have all required certificates, licenses and registrations required for the course(s) they are to teach.
  • An active RN license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master of Science in Nursing with one (1) year full-time teaching experience at a college or university, or
  • Master's in Nursing Education.
  • Strong proficiency in technology and digital tools is preferred, including, but not limited to, expertise in using the Canvas Learning Management System, Microsoft Office Suite, email communication, internet navigation, and other relevant educational or administrative software.

Employment Requirements

Employment Requirements : The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements :

  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan / fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement).
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment : Negative TB Skin Test (PPD) or TB Blood Test (IGRA), Chest X-ray (if history of TB test is positive OR history of BCG injection)

NO IMMUNIZATION DECLINATIONS ACCEPTED.

Physical Examination Report : Physical assessment completed by a healthcare provider, verifying the ability to perform the job's physical demands.

Results from a recent vision and hearing screening to ensure the ability to perform tasks requiring these senses.

  • Health Clearance Form : Documentation from a healthcare provider confirming that the nurse is fit to work without restrictions.
  • Drug Screening : Pre-employment drug test results, often required to ensure the candidate is free of illegal substances per Federal Regulations.

Drug screening may be conducted if there is reasonable suspicion of impairment.

CPR / BLS Certification, PALS, ACLS, etc. : Proof of current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from an American Heart Association (AHA) training center is required.

PALS, ACLS, NRP, fetal monitoring, MAB, etc., depending on assignment.

  • Professional RN License : Free from disciplinary actions or restrictions.
