The Health Care Center Unit Manager is a supervisory position. In this position it is necessary for the Unit Manager to share a harmonious philosophical approach and a compatible working relationship with the Director of Nursing.
The Unit Manager is expected to provide resident care in accordance with facility policy and procedures and with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern facility programs, and as may be directed by the Administrator and / or Director of Nursing to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

General Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise, problem solve and provide direct nursing care services to the residents of The Chesapeake
- Evaluate nursing care given and assure appropriate documentation, guidance, and supervision of staff members by instruction and demonstration according to the resident's plan of care
- Coordinate staff activities and assist where needed
- Arrange for equipment and supplies
- Responsible for effectively communicating with MDS Coordinator the essential resident information to efficiently implement care plan changes.
Responsible for to update care plans as appropriate
- Responsible for the completion of all nursing tasks including, but not limited to the completion of assessment documentation and treatments as assigned by the Director of Nursing to promote the high quality, efficient delivery of nursing care
- Complete and ensure all re-certifications are completed when needed
- Review the 802 report for accuracy and to ensure documentation in the clinical record is appropriate. Report any errors to the MDS Coordinator and / or Director of Nursing
- Review the 24 hour report daily
- Input data to the weekly risk document
- Update evaluations on care plans for incidents
- Review the refrigerator temperature log sheets to ensure completion
- Review audits done by Medical Assistants (Roam Alert Checks, Acuchecks, Code Status, Thinned Charts, etc.), Medical Records Department and Social Services
- Ensure resident charges are reviewed twice a month to verify accuracy
- Ensure adequate staffing
- Pull QA Report for any new physician orders for the previous day(s) and verify that the SIG matches the schedule, and the order is transcribed appropriately.
- Ensure weekly weights are completed
- Participate in and provide opportunities for teaching and staff development
- Attend and participate in continuing educational programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the field of nursing and healthcare as well as to maintain nursing licensure on a current status
- From a supervisory standpoint, identify staff educational needs and in a professional manner, communicate those needs to the Director of Nursing in an effort to advance nursing expertise within the facility
- Participate in orientation and training programs for new staff members
- Participate in survey preparedness and survey inspections
- Recommend and have involvement in disciplinary action to staff under the supervision of the Director of Nursing when indicated
General Qualifications
- A licensed registered nurse (RN) or LPN with career path towards RN in the Commonwealth of Virginia and maintains a CPR / BLS Certification.
- Must possess knowledge of federal and state and local standards, guidelines and regulations in addition to general nursing and medical practices pertaining to long-term care.
- Must possess strong oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively with residents and staff.
- Must possess sound clinical nursing skills and the ability to perform hands-on nursing care including the repositioning and transfer techniques.
- Must have leadership and motivational skills and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
- Must possess the ability to plan, organize and supervise nursing care under the direction of the Health Care Center Director of Nursing.
- The ability to read, write, follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively in English.
