POSITION FUNCTION : The Special Education Nurse is responsible in providing school healthservices to the assigned pupil(s).
The Special Education Nurse provides technical supervision,arranges for professional growth experiences, and coordinates district-wide activities in thisdiscipline according to established policies, guidelines, and departmental priorities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : 1. Serves as a health advocate for the pupil.2. May support adaptation of classroom activities, assignments and / or materials under thedirection of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcingclassroom objectives.
3. Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintainingstudents personal hygiene.4. Provides classroom level leadership to promote healthy attitudes among pupils andteachers and a safe and healthy school environment.
5. Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergencyprocedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and / or conveying information relative tojob functions.
6. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g.restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.
for thepurpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.7. Encourages, coordinates, and participates in programs of health education throughindividual pupil / parent consultation and classroom participation.
8. Facilitates the implementation of Board of Education health related policies.9. Assesses and implements care for pupils according to Board of Education policy, stateSchool Accreditation standards, and Nurse Practice Act regulations.
10. Designs and implements, within approved procedures, a health appraisal program,including dental inspections, vision and hearing screening.
11. Collaborates with other school personnel, including administrators, support staff andteachers, toward the promotion of child health and its optimal interaction with education.
12. Counsels with pupils, parents, and school personnel concerning health needs or healthconcerns of pupils.Page 2 of 313.
Works closely with family regarding the pupil 's health needs, facilitating communicationand health between the school, parents, and the pupil 's health care provider.
14. Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Plan for the assigned pupil(s).Interprets pupil health status and, as indicated, plans, provides, and monitors relatedhealth services.
15. Is knowledgeable of community and health resources and assists parents to utilize theseresources.16. Assists in providing emergency care for pupil(s) and school personnel in case of injury orsudden illness until a lawful custodian assumes responsibility.
17. Ensure documentation of medication and maintain, dispense, and secure all studentmedication according to policy for medication administration.
18. Ensure first aid and health supplies are available and inform Special EducationAdministration of any needed supplies.
19. Ensure a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order toremain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional workenvironment.
