Find your superpower with the Graduate Development Program

National Grid's Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry.

Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we'll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one - putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US.

Following Orientation, you'll begin working in a full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

As an Associate Engineer you will work as part of a team to develop and maintain standards, procedures, electrical operating procedures, and material specifications relative to Substation or Transmission and Distribution Line work, to ensure they are in line with strategic business objectives and in compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.

Standards support new and existing substations, transmission and distribution lines throughout National Grid's US territory which vary in voltage.

This is a hybrid role with as-needed time in the office or local site.

What You'll Do

You will join a team integrated in bringing clean energy and new technology initiatives forward!

You will :

  • Provide technical support to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, and Construction.
  • Work / collaborate with process teams, operations, and other business units to translate objectives into well-defined requirements with clearly defined business cases to support the standardization of practices across Substation or Transmission and Distribution at National Grid.
  • Support identifying, investigating, and qualifying approved manufacturers of equipment and monitor their performance, reliability, service, representation, and contribution to the industry.
  • Engage various Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in technical discussions to facilitate the development of standards and trainings.
  • Attend and participate in conferences and seminars in relation to new technologies, and industry standards to ensure the substation or transmission and distribution standards are up to date on technology, fostering future adaptation and expansion.
  • Research and support the adoption of new and innovative technologies for the substation or transmission and distribution line business, including support of pilots.
  • Able to travel throughout service territories and willing to work extended hours when the job requires, including system emergencies (storm duties) and driving to other company locations for various meetings and training.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025.
  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 2, 2025 or July 7, 2025.
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy.
  • Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States.

As a National Grid employee, you should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
