POSITION SUMMARY :
Are you interested in learning how capacity on Amtrak’s routes and services are planned? As an intern in Amtrak’s Consist Planning team you will learn about and make a meaningful impact on the Amtrak network, including helping to determine where capacity should be deployed by season and by route.
You will work in the Commercial, Service Planning department, utilizing your Bachelor’s degree in Business or Transportation Planning from an accredited university.
You will have the opportunity to apply your academic background in both the office and field, and to gain firsthand field related work experience in the various aspects of complex service planning issues.
Individuals in this role use transportation knowledge and analytical skills to support assigned projects, including :
- Support research, reporting, and analysis efforts.
- Design and develop proposals deploy capacity throughout the Amtrak Network.
- Support, as needed, the Service Planning team in developing consist, schedule, and connecting service proposals to increase revenue opportunities.
- Work with team members and subject matter experts to coordinate efforts on assigned projects
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls
- Research, collect and analyze data
- Communicate effectively and professionally with management
- Assist in providing administrative / logistical support, key analysis, and become an integral part of the consist planning process.
- Become familiar with Transportation safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices in order to perform informed analysis and recommendations.
- Other specific work assignments may be determined based on the needs of project and program assigned to.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
- Must be actively pursuing a graduate degree within Business, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering, or Marketing.
- Must have at least 4 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or graduate status at minimum.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.
- Experience in Microsoft Office software suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be highly organized and have the ability to work productively, be detailed oriented, maintain high level of confidentiality and work with tight deadlines.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS :
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.
In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.
