Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Technologist for the Office for Research.
The Office for Research’s mission is to support the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of all Rutgers faculty.
The Office accomplishes its mission by convening with academic and research leaders, providing integrated, user-focused resources, services, and tools, and partnering with faculty.
Among the key duties of this position are the following :
- Provides technical support to the veterinarians in caring for a wide range of animal species.
- Performs a broad range of duties typical of both a veterinary clinical care and research setting.
- Performs treatment, diagnostic laboratory procedures, and necropsy.
- Keeps records and does rodent breeding and colony management.
- Assists in or perform surgery.
- Trains, observes and monitors research personnel.

Seniority Unit Terms of Appointment Staff - 12 month Position Pension Eligibility ABP Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferably in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science, or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience.
- Plus two years experience in a laboratory or animal care facility preferably including work in both small animal veterinary practices and the animal research environment.
- Or An Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited veterinary technician program, current certification as an RVT, LVT or CVT, plus one year of experience in a laboratory or animal care facility.
Certifications / Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Individual must become AALAS certified, at minimum, at the LAT level within the first year of employment.
- Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers, which requires a pre-placement medical evaluation.
- Must undergo criminal background check in order to work with controlled substances (e.g. narcotics, barbiturates).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician in NJ or another state is desirable.
- Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at any of level of animal technician (ALAT, LAT, LATg)
- Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of farm animal species.
