Job Description

Are you a high-energy and results-focused finance professional looking to serve the community by serving as the Deputy Director of Finance for Virginia’s second largest city?

The City of Chesapeake seeks an experienced professional to serve as Deputy Director of Finance. Through highly effective leadership skills, the deputy supports the CFO / Finance Director and manages and empowers others in a complex, changing environment.

The successful candidate demonstrates emotional intelligence and can adapt their leadership to meet the needs of the Finance team and customers.

The deputy will join a talented and experienced finance staff in a City with a reputation for being stable and well-managed.

This position is open because the previous incumbent has retired. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Deputy Director serves as second in command leading a team of 35 professionals.

With the hiring of the new CFO in February, the team is building on past successes with a renewed focus on customer service, communication, staff development, and process improvement.

Requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Requires a minimum of six years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Advanced credentials or certifications in relevant bodies of knowledge are desirable (i.e. MPA, CPA, CPFO, public administration, leadership).

Required Qualifications Vocational / Educational Requirement : Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.

A master’s degree in business, public administration, or a related field desired.

Experience : In addition to satisfying the vocational / educational standard, this class requires a minimum of six years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses : Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with .

Advanced credentials or certifications in relevant bodies of knowledge are desirable (i.e CPA, CPFO, public administration, leadership).

Special Requirements : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies.

Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties. Preferred Qualifications
