Job Duties

The Dispatcher is charged with monitoring department's communications system. They respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and assistance by dispatching personnel via radio, telephone, or other methods of communication. They obtain information from callers to determine appropriate response methods and responds to message requests, including secure networks, regarding confidential information. The Dispatcher operates the Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN) teletype equipment to address all messages and inquiries; and assist walk-ins to the departmentMonitors safety devices; and provide administrative support to the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Currently certified as a dispatcher through the State of Virginia to operate NCIC, VCIN, and DMV equipment / databases or have the ability to obtain a state certification. Working knowledge of office practices and procedures. The candidate should be skilled in keyboarding. Demonstrate the ability to operate voice communications equipment. The candidate must be able to interpret and apply policies and procedures. Have the ability to organize and prioritize tasks and assignments and work independently. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to respond quickly in emergencies. Must be willing to accept varied shift assignments. Possess a high school diploma or equivalency
