Summer Bridge Residential Peer Mentor (Special Consultant)

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director and Associate Director of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success, the Summer Bridge Residential Peer Mentor is responsible for assisting with the coordination of Summer Bridge events.

This is a residential position, with the expectation that the Summer Bridge Residential Peer Mentor will live on campus and will serve as a role model for program participants.

The Summer Bridge Residential Peer Mentor is responsible for the implementation of peer-led workshop activities and assisting with the supervision of SB participants during off-campus enrichment activities.

The Summer Bridge Residential Peer Mentor will assist residential advisors in the residence halls as needed.

This is a temporary, five-week program expected to end on or before August 9, 2024. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

This position requires the availability to work during evenings and weekends. Incumbents will be required to reside full-time in assigned residence hall throughout the five-week program, including weekends, with rotated duties for evenings and weekends.

The incumbent may not work another job or attend summer school during the program and must be available for training between June 24th to June 28th.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

A primary goal of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success (EOPOS) is to improve access to higher education for students from underrepresented backgrounds by implementing and administering early outreach programs and recruitment processes which develop an understanding of, and support, the pathway to higher education for students and their parents, guardians and loved ones.

EOPOS builds collaborative relationships with schools, school districts, community colleges and other organizations to support this goal.

EOPOS assists students in overcoming historical, traditional, social, economic, psychological, and educational barriers throughout their collegiate experience and in achieving academic success by providing a comprehensive program of support services.

Typical services provided include, but are not limited to : outreach and recruitment, pre-admission counseling, screening-and-selection, professional development in teaching / learning methodologies, program orientation, summer bridge programs, financial aid advising and follow-up, special / regular admission, academic advising, tutoring, learning skills, peer mentoring, and academic / personal support services.

Education and Experience

  • Upper division SDSU student in good academic standing with a 2.75 cumulative GPA or recent SDSU graduate
  • Experience from either a position or situation that required the awareness of the needs of culturally diverse, low-income (often first-generation) college students
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience handling stressful situations effectively

Key Qualifications

  • This position requires the availability to work during evenings and weekends. Incumbents will be required to reside full-time in assigned residence hall throughout the five-week program, including weekends, with rotated duties for evenings and weekends.
  • The incumbent may not work another job or attend summer school during the program.
  • Successful completion of an intensive training program will be required.
  • A graduate level student in student support related programs (Student Affairs, Counseling and Higher Education) is preferred.
  • Experience with the summer bridge program (can be as a participant).
  • Prior experience working as a resident advisor.
  • Experience working in a mentoring capacity.
  • Knowledge of campus student support services.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $128.00 per day.
