Job Purpose : The Safety Specialist is responsible for conducting inspections of multiple jobsites, enforcing adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.

Responsibilities also include the development of safety procedures, and training, educating and mentoring in the area of safety to company personnel.

Roles, Duties, & Responsibilities :

  • Research incidents and claims.
  • Conduct incident review analysis.
  • Analyzes trends and patterns of incidents and near misses. Recommends and facilitates implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Conducts Safety Orientation Training of new employees.
  • Creates jobsite specific safety plans.
  • Trains employees in various topics to include : Forklift Certification, Permit Required Confined Space Certification, First-Aid / CPR Certification, Respiratory Protection, etc.
  • Assists the supervisory personnel in jobsite training when requested and provides audits and evaluation of effectiveness of the supervisory training when requested.
  • Inspects jobsites for safe working conditions to maintain compliance with all state and federal regulations.
  • Inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Audits project documentation and postings.

  • Maintains up-to-date safety manual with current regulations and related training material and annual review.
  • Creates jobsite specific safety plans.
  • Update training schedule / calendar regularly.
  • Assists estimating efforts regarding safety issues.
  • Orders suspension of activities that pose threats to workers’ health and safety.
  • Assists project personnel with safety issues.
  • Facilitates regulatory inspections with OSHA, MSHA, or other state federal agency.
  • Participates in toolbox meetings.
  • Communicates safety regulations and compliance requirements to Management and recommends measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Attends Kick-Off and Preconstruction meetings (in-house and owner).
  • Participates in AGC or TUCA Safety Committee.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

Work Qualifications :

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Computer skills. (i.e., Excel spreadsheets, Word, Power Point)
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations related to safety required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Can be trusted to maintain confidentiality and adhere to company values.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Previous construction experience and a keen interest in construction safety.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with other Management staff, employees, and the general public.
  • Reads and understands various types of accident claims and medical reports and prepares synopsis reports for management.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

Continuing education in Title 29, 30, and 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to identify the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
  • Approaches work in a meticulous, thorough, and detailed manner.
  • Is open to change and can adjust to shifting priorities. Helps others handle organizational and procedural change.
  • Holds a clean DMV and is able to drive for company business.
  • Willing to work flexible hours and / or shifts.
  • Willing to travel.

Education & Work Experience Guidelines :

  • High school diploma / GED equivalency; AND
  • 3 to 5 years’ safety experience in the construction industry; AND
  • First Aid / CPR Certified; AND
  • OSHA 3015 Soil Mechanics
  • OSHA 10 Hour; AND
  • OSHA 500 preferred; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as determined by the hiring manager.
