Summary :
Performs clinical testing in assigned section / s such asgeneral laboratory, Blood Bank and Microbiology sections, with allduties necessary for accurate and timely results including qualitycontrol, performance improvement, proficiency testing, andpreventative maintenance of equipment.
Recognizes abnormal criticalvalues and follows proper guidelines for notifying medical teammembers of results. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomyduties related to daily operations in the laboratory.
Provides / dispenses blood products as requested by medicalstaff.
Responsibilities :

- Ensures thatthe company philosophy and core values are evident in the servicedelivered to customers.
- SpecimenCollection / Handling / Processing obtains blood specimens viavenipuncture and / or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labelsappropriately;
- answers pneumatic tube system; follows proceduresfor processing and testing specimens, including operating variouscentrifuges;
obtains other designated patient specimens as listedin procedure manuals.
- Result Reporting recognizes errors or improbable results and takes appropriateaction; reports critical values per Policy and Procedure;
- performstests within established timeframe; performs laboratory testing, ifdesignated, in the following sections : Hematology, Urinalysis,Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, andMicrobiology;
performs blood bank procedures, includingcrossmatching, ab id’s, and dispensing of blood products; operateslaboratory automated analyzers according to established procedures.
- Performs, analyzes, and records QC accordingto Policy & Procedure following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHOguidelines; performs and records Performance Improvement indicatorsand reports results.
- Performs establisheddaily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation;troubleshoots minor problems and initiates service calls as needed;
orders (or notifies assigned associate) and restockssupplies / reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual; datesreagents and discards expired reagents.
- Takesresponsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth andcontinued education.
- Assists in training newassociates and students in Laboratory practices.
- Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO,and OSHA standards.
- Follows establishedprotocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, andthe use of hazardous materials.
- Utilizes LISand HIS computer systems appropriately to perform, charge, andreport laboratory results.
- Completes annualcompetency assessment successfully and by assigneddate.
JobRequirements : Education / Skills
Education / Skills
Associates Degree or higher inclinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology froman accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training andexperience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation42CFR493.1489 :
Successfullycompleted an official U. S. military medical laboratory procedurestraining course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holdthe military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratoryspecialist (laboratory technician);
60 semester hours or equivalent froman accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24semester hours of science courses that include six semester hoursof chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hoursof chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in anycombination.
Laboratory training including eithercompletion of a clinical laboratory training program approved oraccredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved byHHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semesterhours listed above), or at least three months documented laboratorytraining in each specialty in which the individual performs highcomplexity testing.
Experience
No experience required for graduatesof a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited byNAACLS, or other organizations approved by HHS.
Six Months of approved clinical laboratoryexperience, which must include a clinical rotation through thefollowing sections of the laboratory : Blood Banking, Microbiology,Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis / Body Fluidsin the U.
S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last 5years. (This meets the AMT MLT eligibilityrequirement).
Licenses, Registrations, orCertifications
- Louisiana requires StateLicensure.
- New Graduate that is BoardCertified or eligible (must complete Board Certification in 1 yearof hire, Louisiana excluded).
