The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The person hired for this position will join the Personal Safety Division and will be part of a team of engineers who design and develop innovative and high-quality solutions for our customers to protect people.

The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) developed by this team include Reusable Respirators and Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), which are electromechanical hardgoods products and systems.

These products will utilize various forms of mechanical systems, electronics-based hardware, sensors and software technologies.

Here, you will make an impact by :

  • Designing, developing, and commercialization of new electronic hardgoods respiratory products
  • Supporting existing electronic products, component management & obsolescence, supply chain continuity, and value stream improvements
  • Planning and managing work to meet project plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Communicating progress and issues to key stakeholders to ensure alignment and support.
  • Develop clear and concise technical specifications
  • Having a hands-on approach to creating physical functional objects; performing all steps required in taking a design from concept through production, from component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, bill of materials generation, ECO processes, prototype assembly, debug, test and shepherding through production, and post launch support

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires ( at a minimum) the following qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Five (5) years’ experience in product development or product engineering of electronic systems in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include :

  • Master’s degree with two (2) years' experience
  • Proficiency with electronic design automation software such as Altium for printed circuit boards
  • Expertise with electronic lifecycle management, including schematic capture, simulation, board layout, bill-of-materials (BOM) management, and component lifecycle review
  • Management of ground up designs and comfortable with adopting, reviewing, and improving designs of others.
  • Systems and cross functional design knowledge
  • Working knowledge of design tools and philosophies such as DFM, DFT, DFA, and design for supply chain flexibility
  • Involvement in various failure mode analysis tools such as FMEA and root cause analysis
  • Software & computer programming expertise
  • Proficiency with wireless communication technologies such as BLE, DECT, LoWPAN, LoRa, CatM0
  • Understanding of intellectual property and the tools to monitor the state of the art.
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations.
  • Candidate should have a "hands on, self-starter" orientation to their work, have broad interests and willingness to explore new areas well outside conventionally established electronic’ engineering roles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Travel : May include up to 15% domestic and international

Relocation Assistance : May be authorized

Work location : Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to ,Maplewood 3M Center )
