SUMMARY : The Deputy Director of Technical Services at the Massachusetts Convention Center will assist the Director in overseeing and managing the technical services department.

This role involves strategic planning, coordination, and implementation of technology initiatives to support the Center's operations.

The Deputy Director will ensure the efficient and secure functioning of all technical systems and infrastructure, working closely with other departments to align technology solutions with organizational goals.

  • Assist the Director of Technical Services in developing and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance the Center's technical services.
  • Serve as the acting Director of Technical Services in the Director's absence, ensuring continuity of operations and decision-making.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and maintenance of the Center’s IT infrastructure and systems, ensuring they meet current and future needs.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to align technology initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Lead cross-functional teams including the Network Infrastructure, Systems, and ITSS teams, in the planning and execution of large-scale projects and initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the technical services budget, including forecasting and tracking expenses.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and vendors to enhance the Center's technical capabilities.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and contract negotiations to ensure the best value and service for the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to technology and data security.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Technical Operations, develop and implement policies and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of technical operations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for the technical services team and provide guidance for professional development.
  • Represent the Technical Services department in executive meetings and provide updates on key projects and initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the technical services team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Directly supervise team leads and senior technical staff, including the Network Infrastructure, Systems, and ITSS teams, providing leadership and guidance.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of training programs for technical staff to ensure they stay current with emerging technologies and best practices.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Supervision is provided by the Director of Technical Operations and includes assignment of duties, inspection of work, training, coaching, and performance evaluations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Must have an understanding of both Microsoft and VMware applications and infrastructure services.
  • Must understand how to leverage cloud and automation technologies.
  • Ability to adapt security strategy and technologies to address organizational needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients.
  • Strong documentation / reporting skills.
  • Advanced analytical / troubleshooting and organizational skills.
  • Capable of resolving critical software and hardware issues in a time-sensitive manner, cognizant of requisite service levels.
  • Must be fluent with Windows networking.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant work experience and / or certifications may be considered.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience in a technical leadership role with increasing responsibility.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning and project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage large-scale projects.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise IT infrastructure, including cloud technologies, virtualization, and network security.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, vendors, and executive leadership.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.

WORK SCHEDULE : The work schedule for this position typically is a 40-hour work week consisting of five (5) eight (8) hour days, Monday through Friday;

however, the hours and days may fluctuate based upon the needs of a particular event or project, which would require the ability to work a flexible schedule including late nights, early mornings, long days, weekends and holidays.
