Position Description

Seattle University has an exciting, dynamic opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Manager to join our community.

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for preparing mechanical engineering laboratories, including the machine shop for laboratory instruction, organizing and maintaining laboratory / shop equipment, conducting machining operations in support of the instructional and research activities of the department and college, and effectively communicating and working with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Preparation for mechanical engineering laboratories, including the machine shop, in consultation with mechanical engineering faculty.
  • Managing and maintaining equipment in laboratories and the machine shop.
  • Knowledge of electronic circuits and instrumentation.
  • Knowing experimental methods and equipment for mechanical, thermal, controls, and electronics applications.
  • Setting up and assisting faculty in the execution of instructional and research experiments.
  • Conducting machining operations in support of the instructional and research activities of the faculty in the department.
  • Supervising students in the laboratories and the machine shop in conducting instructionally-related projects.
  • Awareness of current and evolving technologies and tools; and self-directed learning of new technology.
  • Maintain instructional laboratory and machine shop equipment and supplies.
  • Set up instructional laboratory equipment; supervise day-to-day operations in the mechanical engineering teaching laboratories and the machine shop;

enforce shop and lab safety rules.

  • Assist with the teaching of the machine shop laboratory; supervise / authorize student use of the machine shop.
  • Fabricate components for instructional and research use.
  • Carry out precision machining with conventional machinery and with computer numerically controlled machinery.
  • Design parts using parametric solid modeling CAD (Computer Aided Design) software.
  • Develop parts programs in G-code utilizing CAD / CAM software (Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Machining).
  • Effectively communicate and work with faculty, staff, and students; and learn new technology.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a science or engineering field; a combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • The ability to work with faculty and supervise students in a shop setting is an essential requirement.

Preferred Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a science field. Experience in laboratory management, and three years’ experience as a machinist.

Safety and hazardous material training.

Experience with multiaxis CNC machining and the ability to conduct welding operations.

Salary Range : $60,000 - $67,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
