Exercises technical leadership in devising approaches to meet project objectives. Plans, prepares, conducts and records complex bench level chemical / biochemical experiments.

Prepares reports and analysis of results as related to product / process development improvement. Guides and mentors other scientists and project team members to accomplish project objectives.

Responsibilities :

  • Devises experimental plans to accomplish project objectives.
  • Innovates new techniques and devises novel strategies to better accomplish project goals.
  • Reports status of assigned projects through the preparation of detailed reports and documentation that summarize experiment results.

Interprets results of experiments and recommends alternative experiments.

Works within established parameters on individual assignments, on project teams for longer-term projects, or as a leader for a project team or group.

Presents experimental results to supervisor, project team members or to the broader organization and contributes ideas to improve team or organizational processes.

Provides leadership in technical decisions affecting product development issues. Identifies problems, investigates alternatives and recommends possible courses of action.

Works with team members and other Business Unit personnel (operations, product transfer, project management, and quality departments) to meet department and project objectives.

  • Prepares and / or contributes to articles for publication. Presents information at project meetings, scientific meetings or to customers.
  • Attends technical conferences or seminars. Is a subject matter expert in technologies that may assist in the completion of an assignment or lead to new products, processes or procedures.
  • Responsibilities include supporting and complying with the company's hazardous waste management program, including following safe, hazardous waste handling practices.
  • Mentors other scientific personnel and provides expert technical advice to the broader organization.
  • Works under general supervision, receiving instructions on broader requirements, without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.

Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective for desired results.

Required Work Experience :

  • Requires five to seven (5-7) years of prior relevant experience often acquired in an academic or industrial environment.
  • Non Ph.D. must have a distinguished record in either an academic or industrial setting, as demonstrated through publications, patents, or technologies or products developed.

Preferred Work Experience :

GMP / QSR experience preferred.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge :

  • Ability to design and develop LC-MS / MS-based assays for the detection and quantification of target analytes in biological specimens (urine, oral fluid, hair).
  • Experience optimizing assay parameters such as sample preparation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry conditions to achieve high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.
  • Experience in a GMP or QSR environment preferred.
  • Experience with relevant scientific computing applications.
  • Analyze and interpret LC-MS / MS data to generate accurate and reliable results.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot LC-MS / MS instrumentation and software.
  • Ability to lead a mass spectrometry-based project with minimal oversight. Technical competency required to manage laboratory systems.
  • Ability to write, interpret, and critique technical specifications and related documentation.

Knowledge :

  • Knowledgeable in the use of common laboratory equipment and safe chemical handling.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of related products and technologies gained through developmental experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Skills :

Ability to read and interpret documents such as professional journals, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write complete reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively in one-on-one and small or large group situations.

  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to problem-solving situations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance and correlation techniques.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
