Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a forward-thinking Manager of the National and Cyber Security Information Sciences (NCSIS) Department within the Strategic Security Sciences (SSS) Division.

With an annual budget of $75M+ and over 130 employees, the SSS Division advances national and global security through cross-disciplinary research that generates practical approaches and technical solutions to complex, enduring, and emerging threats.

The Department Manager will be responsible for management and leadership of the multi-program NCSIS Department. The NCSIS Department is comprised of over 50 employees in five R&D groups engaged in complex, mission-oriented projects vital to protecting our nation’s security, innovating tools and approaches to rapidly evolving challenges in cybersecurity and mission-critical operations.

  • The NCSIS portfolio encompasses modeling and analytics for transportation logistics and supply chain security; critical infrastructure cybersecurity;
  • artificial intelligence / machine learning for cybersecurity, nonproliferation, and other relevant missions; autonomous cyber defense and situational awareness;

cybersecurity workforce development; and knowledge discovery and management systems, among others. The Department Manager will play a key role in evolving these programs and growing new research areas that leverage Argonne’s world-class high-performance computing capabilities and unique research facilities.

The NCSIS Department Manager will drive the Department’s strategic research and workforce priorities in alignment with Division, Directorate, and Laboratory strategies and will collaborate to develop new programs and initiatives while conducting original, ground-breaking research.

The Department Manager will be expected to spend 40% time on Department leadership and management and 60% time conducting research and development aligned with their technical expertise and Department priorities.

The successful candidate will :

Directly manage five Group Leaders and manage team performance, including development / mentorship of leaders and staff within the Department.

Create a department culture of innovation, respect, and integrity that attracts, retains, and inspires high caliber staff and fosters their professional development.

Serve as a critical member of the Division leadership team and Directorate extended leadership team, driving S&T strategy that leverages unique Argonne capabilities and facilities.

Work with Department Group Leaders, principal investigators, and sponsor points of contact to innovate and develop new programs to address Federal sponsor priorities through cross-disciplinary and cross-organizational collaborations.

Provide oversight to ensure compliance with all safety and security policies and procedures, including oversight of classified programs within the department.

Lead and conduct original research in areas of strategic impact.

Position Requirements

Comprehensive leadership and management skills necessary to define, communicate, and implement a strategic vision for the Department, aligned with Division / Directorate / Laboratory strategy.

Demonstrated track record in successfully managing multidisciplinary research teams and individuals, a passion for mentoring, and a reputation for integrity and trust.

Demonstrated ability to identify new research areas, strategically prioritize opportunity pursuits, develop successful proposals, and build large programs and trusted sponsor relationships as part of a larger organizational strategy.

  • Comprehensive technical expertise and a research track record in one or more of the following domains : artificial intelligence / machine learning;
  • advanced cybersecurity methods and technologies; computer science and engineering; software engineering; modeling and simulation;

model-based systems engineering; and / or computational science and engineering. Broad knowledge of multiple domains relevant to the Department is desirable.

  • Knowledge of research programs and priorities of the Department of Energy Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER);
  • Department of Energy / National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA); Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Department of Defense (DoD);

and / or other federal sponsors is desirable.

Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a track record of building and sustaining consensus and collaboration among key stakeholders (internally and externally).

A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne's Core Values : Impact, Respect, Safety, Integrity, and Teamwork.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education and a Ph.D. or M.S. degree in computer science / engineering, software engineering, cybersecurity, or other relevant fields, and 8+ years of practical experience or equivalent.

To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Q clearance and higher-level clearances.

This position will be hybrid. On-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois will be required at least 2 days / week.
