Job Description
We have an opening for a Faculty Member to engage in exploratory program development, technical consulting, and scoping studies in the context of self-driving laboratories.
This will be part of a work-study assignment of mutual interest to further their teaching or research goals. You will actively participate it exploring different configurations of tabletop experiments, provide guidance on the development of new control strategies and software systems, and engage in strategic planning to advance the development of autonomous experiments.
This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computer within the Computing Directorate.
In this role, you will
- Engage in at least one of the following areas of interest : Explore and test various hardware and software combinations for tabletop experimental platforms;
- Consult on the development of new experimental control systems to enable self-driving laboratories; Guide summer interns in research on self-driving technology and the design of new tabletop experiments;
Consult on the deployment of existing control systems to LLNL experimental platforms.
- Engage in strategic planning on future directions aiming to establish autonomous experimental platforms.
- Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management to enable the transfer of the theoretical developments in the application areas and identify and document potential roadblocks in this transfer.
- Gather and analyze the data in support of scientific research.
- Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions.
- Participate in activities as appropriate to provide exposure to the Laboratory Scholar Engagement and Education Plan (SEEP).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- degree in mathematics or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Must be a continuing faculty at an accredited institution.
- Experience with scientific experiments.
- Significant experience in experimental control systems.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Experience working with computers and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
