What We Do
Sequoia is looking for well-rounded, multidisciplinary thinkers who can blend the art of underwriting with the science of technology.
We’re seeking candidates with range and intellectual diversity, who understand that 21st-century underwriting means synthesizing both quantitative, data-driven insights and qualitative, human-centered judgment into a holistic viewpoint.
As a Sequoia Product Underwriter, you’ll be responsible for identifying solutions to complex problems in collaboration with other Sequoia leaders from operations, product management, engineering, and design.
What You’ll Get to Do :
- Work under the direction of the VP of Sequoia Underwriting, executing on our vision to leverage the best of humans and machines for the benefit of First American and its customers.
- Collaborate with colleagues in other departments, building cooperative efforts to find the technology-enabled sweet spot where careful risk selection results in a profitable, compliant, 21st-century insurance business.
- Shepherd the development of 21st-century underwriting talent, growing the skills of current team members, and serving as a talent magnet to attract more A+ level multidisciplinary thinkers to the Sequoia Team.
- Work as co-developer of new technology, products, and services alongside technical and business-operations counterparts, helping to coach, translate, and explain complex underwriting subjects across cultural lines.
- Advise leadership on strategy regarding the role of technology in title insurance and settlement services.
What You’ll Need to Do It :
- Excellent ability to build relationships, generate empathy, and create rapport across a variety of different constituencies, from technologists to profit-center managers.
- Demonstrated leadership ability or capacity to grow empathetic leadership skills, grounded in the philosophy of extreme ownership.
- The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, with the ability to adjust communication style or method as appropriate for diverse audiences.
- A strong understanding of (or experience in) modern product-development processes and user-centered design practices.
- An expert-level understanding of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of real estate title insurance and settlement services processes.
- Drive to be constantly upskilling and learning new areas relevant to the intersection of real property and technology.
- Intellectual curiosity and an aversion to the status quo.
- Demonstrated technical aptitude (e.g., working understanding of a software engineering language or technical requirement writing).
Desired Applicant Educational Background :
- Bachelor’s degree;
- Law degree and / or graduate degree in a relevant field preferred
Desired Applicant Experience or Professional Background :
- 5+ years of title industry experience (particularly title search / examination or underwriting), and / or 5+ years of law practice in the areas of real property or technology
- Open to remote candidates*
Pay Range : $168,125.00 210,107.85 annually.
This hiring range is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the salary range of possible compensation at the time of the posting, and is subject to change.
The actual compensation offered will be determined by various factors, which may include a candidate’s education, training, experience, and geographic location.
