Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, performs semi-skilled locksmithing work in the repair, maintenance, and installation of locks;

cuts, distributes, and updates / maintains a District / college log of new or duplicate keys; installs and repairs door hardware.

Representative Duties 1. Ensures the security and safety of campus and District equipment and facilities through proper maintenance of door locks and closures. E

2. Repairs, installs, and adjusts doors, door closers, tumblers, springs, and other hardware.

3. Installs and adjusts door locks, panic hardware, cabinet locks, and other locking devices. E Changes lock combinations as necessary;

cuts new or duplicate keys; keys and rekeys locks. E

4. Maintains record control and key room for campus security. E

5. Assists in performing other skilled maintenance duties as assigned. E

6. Operates a variety of tools and equipment utilized in performing work as required. E

7. Trains and provides work direction to student assistants, student workers, and / or short-term, temporary staff, as assigned. E

8. Fabricates replacement parts for obsolete locks. E

  • 9. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and / or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms;
  • opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment;
  • enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed;

follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E

Knowledge and Abilities KNOWLEDGE OF :

  • District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
  • California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.

  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in locksmith activities.
  • Terminology related to the area of assignment.
  • Applicable codes and regulations related to the area of assignment.
  • Recordkeeping, filing, file sharing, and filing systems methods and techniques.
  • Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
  • Variety of locks available and the best use for each type.
  • Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in locksmithing activities.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

ABILITY TO :

  • Independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Perform semi-skilled locksmithing work in the repair, maintenance, and installation of locks.
  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance work in the repair, adjustment, and change of electronic keys and combination locks.
  • Repair locks and lockers, make keys, use, and maintain hand tools and locksmithing tools and equipment.
  • Maintain related records and files.
  • Operate a personal computer to enter data, maintain records, and generate reports, as needed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Change lock combinations, as necessary.
  • Cut new or duplicate keys and rekey locks.
  • Operate a District, college, or personal vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Update and maintain records, files, file sharing, and filing systems methods and techniques.
  • Utilize computer software programs, applications, and databases; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of assignment.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others during the course of work.
  • High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED); AND
  • Five (5) years of experience or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate journey-level skill in the locksmith trade.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Equivalencies Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date.

Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates / Credentials

  • Certification in the area of assignment.
  • Valid and insurable California driver license.
  • May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Desired Qualifications Associate degree with coursework in the area of assignment. Distinguishable Characteristics Working Conditions Physical Demands

perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.
