SUMMARY : The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Nursing is to assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as directed by the Administrator, the Medical Director, and / or the Director of Nursing, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing department.
  • Ensure that reference material at the nurse’s station is current and recommend written material to assist the nursing department.
  • Develop and periodically update nursing service objectives and statements of philosophy.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a nursing organization structure.
  • Ensure that all nursing personnel follow their job descriptions.
  • Participate in facility surveys made by authorized government agencies.
  • Assist in planning the nursing portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms and reports.
  • Monitor the facility’s QI, QM, and survey reports and provide recommendations to the Director.
  • Assist the Director in obtaining staffing information for daily posting.
  • Agree not to disclose resident’s protected health information.
  • Serve on the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee as directed.
  • Schedule and participate in developing the agenda for Care Plan Team Meetings.
  • Assist the Director in determining staffing needs and recruitment.
  • Ensure sufficient nursing staff for quality care.
  • Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurse and Nurse Supervisors.
  • Assist in preparing performance evaluations.
  • Make daily rounds to ensure nursing personnel perform their assignments.
  • Review complaints and grievances made by department personnel.
  • Ensure fair administration of departmental disciplinary action.
  • Interpret the department’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensure participation in the facility’s TB testing program.
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission.
  • Inform nursing personnel of new admissions and ensure rooms are ready.
  • Review nurse’s notes for informativeness and compliance with resident wishes.
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents' nursing needs.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to Director and assist in corrective actions.
  • Participate in developing and scheduling in-service training.
  • Assist in scheduling annual mandatory in-service training for staff.
  • Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing department.
  • Assist in identifying tasks with potential exposure to blood / body fluids.
  • Ensure nursing personnel work areas are maintained in a clean manner.
  • Ensure resident care rooms are maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • Ensure participation in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of medications and supplies.
  • Assist in developing a preventive maintenance program for nursing equipment.
  • Ensure only trained personnel operate department equipment safely.
  • Participate in developing assessments of nursing needs for residents.
  • Encourage resident and family participation in the care plan development.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information.
  • Ensure nursing personnel are knowledgeable of residents’ rights.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Registered Nurse with a current unencumbered state license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in a healthcare facility.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Supportive team member and example of teamwork.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel and the public.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing practices and regulations.
  • Patience, tact, enthusiasm, and willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
