Associate Dean of Community Engagement and Outreach (AD)

The School of Social Work (SSW) is accepting applications for an . This is a senior-level administrative leadership role and, depending on candidates’ qualifications, a secondary appointment as a faculty member will be considered.

The AD will serve as a member of the SSW’s leadership team, create and direct the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach (OCEO), and support our commitment to working with communities to enhance research, teaching, and clinical training.

In particular, the AD will lead five major efforts :

1) Outreach & Engagement : In collaboration with the Dean, the AD will provide leadership and support for outreach and engagement activities that will connect the school with communities throughout NC and beyond.

The outreach activities will help faculty, staff, and students partner with external groups, such as nonprofits, agencies, schools, and advocates.

The AD will work closely with relevant units to oversee the planning, marketing, and community outreach for programs and projects led by the administrative team, groups and institutes, community partners, and SSW faculty.

2) Professional Development & Lifelong Learning : Additionally, the AD will oversee aspects of planning, marketing, and implementation of events and initiatives related to community engagement.

This role ensures that our outreach and engagement activities provide learning opportunities, advance scholarship, support innovation, and foster professional development opportunities.

As such, this position has responsibility for managing the Continuing Education Unit and coordinating with Academic Affairs to launch new certificates and credentialing programs, to measure the impact and identify opportunities to expand and improve certificates and programs, and to adapt to the needs of the existing workforce.

3) Community-Engaged Scholarship : The AD will be responsible for coordinating relevant SSW and university staff, engaging the community, ensuring necessary processes are followed, and that resources are available to support the successful development and launch of community-engaged scholarship.

The individual will help create and maintain reciprocal, inclusive partnerships between the SSW and communities so that research, teaching, and service are conducted with communities to address social problems.

The AD will foster a collegial and collaborative work environment and work to improve SSW’s relationship with the community and its capacity for community-engaged scholarship.

4) Creation & Oversight of the OCEO & Recharge Center : The AD will be responsible for the creation and management of the OCEO, with additional responsibilities for direction and operational support of the Recharge Center.

In service to internal and external groups and entities, the AD will serve as the OCEO administrative officer and as supervisor for a team of fixed-term faculty and staff providing management of processes, policies, operational needs, and complex personnel issues.

The OCEO will operate a service recharge center providing consultation, evaluation, research, and technical assistance to help UNC researchers and non-profits build their capacity.

The Recharge Center will advance the teaching and research mission of the school and university while also helping statewide non-profits who require added capacity and expertise to optimize their productivity and better serve their stakeholders.

5) Community Relations & Coordination : Working with leadership, the AD will cultivate relationships at all community levels with a particular focus on individuals from the public sector, elected decision makers, non-profit leaders, and health and human service industry partners.

They will be a critical point of contact for organizations and entities seeking the school’s involvement and input on community matters.

Networking with community members and other leaders will be an essential role of this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience;

for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience in higher education with administrative and / or leadership experience in social service or research administration.

Given that this position entails the creation of a new office, it is imperative that the candidates demonstrate experience conceptualizing, implementing, and testing the effectiveness of new or existing programs, structures, policies, projects and / or change processes.

Individual must possess the ability and socioemotional skills to engage and communicate a message of hope and possibility to diverse parties within the Community, University and School of Social Work and create the necessary collaborative partnerships to overcome the complex challenges they and we face together.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Preferred qualifications include :

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in higher education with administrative and / or leadership experience experience as a department chair, assistant dean, and / or program director or coordinator) or leadership experience in social service or research administration.
  • A master’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or similar discipline.
  • A minimum of two years post-master’s degree practice experience.
  • A demonstrated record of program implementation, program evaluation, and the science of community engagement
  • A demonstrated record of team science, including the ability to organize groups, coalitions, and non-profit organizations to impact micro and macro-level change.
  • A demonstrated record of event planning or program management / project coordination experience.
  • Evidence of developing collaborative partnerships among student leaders, faculty, staff, community advocates, and community organizations at the local, state, or national level.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Special Physical / Mental Requirements Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
