Under the direction of the Cal-SOAP Director, and in consultation with the Imperial Valley Assistant Director, the Imperial Valley Assistant Coordinator plans and implements recruitment of program participants at Imperial Valley schools to motivate students towards college.
This position is responsible for maintaining relationships with higher education institutions and / or community entities to implement informational, motivational, and academic preparation activities for socio-economically disadvantaged students in grades K-12.
Develops and maintains program visibility in schools by conducting academic enrichment workshops; providing one-on-one advising, motivational activities, information about college preparation.
Will recruit, train and supervise student college peer advisors and tutors.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
Demonstrated skill in working independently and exercising sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy when working with students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education. Knowledge of state and national trends as they relate to Cal-SOAP Programs and understanding of related issues in higher education with ability to evaluate academic data and records and make analytical decisions as well as provide direct support to students and their families in FAFSA / CADA completion, postsecondary applications (UC, CSU, CC and private institutions) and motivation.
Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
Ability to analyze, apply and explain defined academic policies.
Experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged and academically at-risk students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers.
Ability to interpret academic records of students to make appropriate recommendations regarding students' curriculum.
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate programs and activities with other staff, departments and school administrators to meet program needs.
Thorough knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements. Knowledge in college entrance testing (ACT / SAT) a-g completion, and AP / IB credit .
Ability to conduct independent and unsupervised individual and group counseling sessions with participating students / parents.
Knowledge of admissions and financial aid policies and procedures for various public and private colleges and universities.
Competency in the use of personal computers which includes knowledge of software, data-base and word processing systems
Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal, group, and cross-cultural communication skills. Skill in public speaking and presentations.
Ability to lead and facilitate effective group and team-building activities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Bilingual English / Spanish preferred but not required.
