Summary :
Reporting to the Director of Energy, Utilities, and Sustainability, the Supervisor of Central Plant administers and manages the Utilities Services Department and monitors and records all activities of all equipment with-in Central Utilities Plant as well as main utility distribution systems, and controls.
Job Description :
Manages assigned staff; interviews, hires, trains, assigns work to, and schedules personnel; evaluates performance and determines personnel actions;
and ensures that all members of Utilities Services provide the highest level of customer services to the campus community.
- Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled mechanical duties associated with the maintenance and operations of the Central Utilities Plant, as well as campus remote sites.
- Plans and administers a balanced department budget; authorizes payroll and non-payroll expenses.
- Assists the Director as needed with utility contracts to secure the best market rates available that includes forecasting.
- Monitors and performs preventative maintenance in coordination with Maintenance and Operations for remote campus sites.
- Supervises, directs and assists co-workers on assigned shifts in all phases of Central Utility Plant operations; works other shifts as needed;
and performs regular routine duties of the Central Utility Plant.
- Contacts Director for assistance with emergencies which occur after normal duty hours; and possesses knowledge of all emergency procedures and implements as appropriate.
- Attends Facilities and / or campus meetings as needed to provide utility operational input.
- Makes repairs, as required, on plant equipment including boilers, chillers, associated control and distribution systems, valves, flanges, pumps, piping, etc.
- Conducts preventive maintenance inspections and repairs of plant equipment and distribution systems; keeps equipment, work areas and plants clean at all times including mopping and sweeping floors on each duty shift;
and keeps tools, equipment and supplies in order; paints equipment, as necessary.
- Implements industry standard energy savings and sustainable technologies in all aspects of plant operations.
- Works in close spaces such as on the inside of boilers, chillers, tunnels, tanks and manholes.
- Observes all safety regulations and practices, to include daily review of logs, licenses, regulations to ensure the physical plant operations are within the industry standards.
- Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
- Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
- Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
- Performs related and other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications :
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of seven years of experience with central utility plant operations (Bachelor's degree with three years of professional experience in the above-mentioned area will be considered).
- Valid unrestricted District of Columbia First Class Engineer's license.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
- Experience working in a higher education setting.

Additional Position Details :
If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 1 plus within two years of employment.
If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment.
The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
