About The Position
The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking a nontenure track faculty in the discipline of Health Systems Science.
The Health Systems Science Thread Leader will train medical students on the study and understanding of how care is delivered across health systems, how professionals work together, and how health systems science can improve healthcare delivery, safety, and outcomes.
The goal of the content in this thread is to integrate topics related to health systems thinking, healthcare delivery, physician professional role, healthcare finance and policy, and ethics and legal considerations with other areas of the medical curriculum.
The faculty position is 1.0 FTE : Thread leader Role .5 FTE and direct clinical care. 5 FTE (if MD or DO).
The Health Systems Science Thread Leader will develop and manage all four-year components of this thread including learning objectives, active learning activities, student assessments, and faculty recruitment.
This individual will collaborate closely with Course Directors and other Thread Leaders and administrators from the ARCHES curriculum as part of an interdisciplinary team.
The ARCHES curriculum is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. It includes the following six core elements :

- H ealth Systems Science
- E mbracing Whole Health
- S cience of Medicine
All six threads of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.
This position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level within the non-tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications.
Major Responsibilities / Essential Functions Specific to the Position :
Develop a four-year Health Systems Science curricular thread encompassing health systems thinking, healthcare delivery, physician professional role, healthcare finance, and related policy, ethics and legal topics.
In collaboration with Course Directors and other Thread Leaders, develop course objectives, session learning objectives, small and large group active learning sessions, formative and summative assessments.
- Work closely with the faculty, Course Directors, and other Thread Leaders to develop a vertically and horizontally integrated curricular thread.
- Facilitate and deliver thread-related content using active learning methodologies (e.g., flipped classroom).
- Recruit and identify faculty and staff involved in all aspects of the Health Systems Science curricular thread.
- Collaborate with the Senior Director of Assessment and Evaluation in the development and interpretation of content assessment and evaluation.
- Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum Management to facilitate curriculum mapping related to the thread.
- Actively participate in service-related activities, including membership on committees and workgroups within AWSOM and the community.
- Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.
- Together with the Faculty Affairs Office, facilitate faculty development related to the Health Systems Science.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD / PhD, EdD, or equivalent) with specific training / experience in health systems science or a closely related field.
Minimum Work Experiences
- Three or more years of experience with curriculum development in undergraduate medical education and / or health systems science in higher education.
- Evidence of teaching excellence in undergraduate medical education and / or postgraduate education.
- Experience in curricular development and student evaluation in higher education.
Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in an LCME or COCA accredited undergraduate medical education.
- Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies.
