Job Description
The spinal cord RN will provide patient-centered care by performing tasks that meet the health, emotional, and practical needs of the patients.
These duties will include but are not limited to the following.
- Assess the health care, emotional, and logistical needs of the patient and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals
- Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient medical record
- Communicates and treats all patients and / or families in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner
- Perform head-to-toe assessment, administer medication including IVs, are of PICC lines
- Coordinate and participate in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient
- Measure vital signs, including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc. EKGs as needed
- Perform wound care including dressing changes and obtaining wound cultures as necessary
- Obtain and deliver specimens to lab
- Perform tracheostomy care, Perform suctioning including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy
- Perform non-acute / acute ventilator care, as needed
- Assess for and administer tube feedings
- Assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including indwelling and suprapubic catheters, colostomies, external devices, and digital stimulation
- Educate patients and / or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration
- Activate the Emergency Medical Response as indicated based on patient presentation or change in condition
- Perform Continuous Protective Observation (CPO) duties to maintain veteran safety
- Perform patient belongings and Contraband inspection and documentation as outlined by facility policy
- Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians
- Rapid Response and Cardiac Arrest (code) response within the unit.

- Other duties as assigned by VA team
Qualifications
Basic Requirements / Certifications :
- Full Unrestricted RN License Any state
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalency.
- Min 1 year experience as Spinal Cord RN OR 2 year experience
Education Required :
Candidates must be a graduate of a school of nursing that was approved and / or accredited by the appropriate State agency and accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at the time the program was completed.
Physical Requirements :
- Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
- May require bending, stooping and lifting to 20 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications :
- US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
- Must relocate to project site for the duration of the contract.
- Pass / possess VA Public Trust Clearance
- Ventilator experience is preferred
Note on Scheduling
RNs will provide coverage for full-time VA staff. Most common shifts include :
- PM Shift : (2) RNs - (12) hour shift 7 : 30 a.m. 8 : 00 p.m., to include weekends and holidays
- Night Shift : (2) RNs - (12) hour shift 7 : 30 p.m. 8 : 00 a.m., to include weekends and holidays
The first several weeks of the contract will require training during regular business hours

Compensation Min : 66,560 Max : $148,000
Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and / or other benefits.
Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
