Characteristics of Work

This is a professional position in which the incumbent provides principal legal support to the Legislative Services Office, a division of the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Incumbents perform legislative legal work, prepare documents and perform other work related assignments for legislative attorneys in accordance with legislative deadlines.

The Legislative Services Office is a deadline driven office, which includes late nights and weekend work. Primarily, the work involves contact with legislative attorneys for the purpose of creating confidential information.

Some contact with members of the Mississippi House of Representatives for the purpose of exchanging confidential and non-routine information will occur.

Other duties include composing and reviewing legislative correspondence, typing and editing legislative documents, setting up and maintaining files and records and performing other related duties.

The incumbent exercises a degree of confidentiality essential in the execution of legislative administrative duties and in the performance of clerical functions requiring a high level of proficiency.

Examples of Work

Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following :

Composes correspondence and other material involving legislative procedures or policies in accordance with legislative deadlines.

Maintains legal and confidential files and dockets.

Compiles data from bills, statutes and legislative policies and procedures in accordance with legislative deadlines.

Examines files involving internal legislative matters and assists in the preparation of legislative documents in accordance with legislative deadlines.

Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

Essential Functions

Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring agency. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following :

1. Maintains legal and confidential files ensuring accuracy and organization.

2. Types non-technical, technical and confidential correspondence, reports, and other legal documents.

3. Compiles data from bills, statutes and legislative policies and procedures in accordance with legislative deadlines.

4. Performs routine office and receptionist duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThese physical requirements are not exhaustive, and additional job related physical requirements may be added to these by individual agencies on an as-needed basis.

Near Acuity : Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Speaking / Hearing : Possesses the ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening skills.

Motor Coordination : While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.

The incumbent is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to walk; stand;

climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend.
