About the Position

The Law Enforcement Services Officer provides a variety of specialized law enforcement, customer service, crime prevention, detainee care, and custody duties in support of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

This position performs customer service, specialized public safety work and administrative support in multiple divisions within the Office, depending upon assignment.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

List in order of importance)

  • Investigates minor reports of crimes in person and by phone, responds to accident calls, conducts preliminary investigations at scenes, records information, prepares reports of actions and findings, and presents testimony and evidence in both civil and criminal court proceedings as required.
  • Assists in traffic control and protects major accidents and crime scenes, responds to abandoned vehicles, parking issues , towing requests, roadway hazards, and distressed motorists / individuals, and operates assigned county vehicles as required to assist with major accidents or calls for service.
  • Receives, prioritizes, and responds to non-violent reports of crimes, including criminal damage, property theft and burglary, handles walk-up traffic and crime reports from the public.
  • Transports and retrieves evidence, provides support with crime scene processing, and assists with Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
  • Participates in booking, searching, and identifying new detainees, verifies information on booking forms, photographs and fingerprints detainees, processes property according to procedure, and enters information into databases.
  • Maintains the security of detainees and facility, controls detainee behavior and promotes standards of acceptable conduct.
  • Aids public with varied customer service functions, receives and routes calls and electronic subpoenas, and assists with mail distribution.

Checks local and state warrants and collects and disburses related paperwork.

  • Performs varied administrative tasks, prepares paperwork, reports, logs and related documents, and orders forms and supplies as needed.
  • Be present at work site to perform tasks as scheduled and assigned by the supervisor.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

High school diploma or GED

Experience :

One year of face-to-face public contact experience in a similar role involving the interpretation and explanation of laws, ordinances, rules and / or regulations.

Specialized training, certifications, and / or other special requirements :

Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license.

Training with the exception of Arizona driver's license to be provided on-the-job : FEMA NIMS - IS100 and 700; OSHA training;

ADP payroll training; PREA training; and Arizona State Criminal Justice Information Systems Terminal Operator Certification.

Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates pass an extensive background review.

Preferred education and / or experience :

College-level course work in criminal justice, public relations, or a closely related field and previous law enforcement experience is desirable.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities :

Knowledge of :

  • principles, practices, methods, techniques and equipment used in law enforcement
  • County geography,incorporated areas and road network
  • proper use of punctuation, spelling, and grammar

Skill in :

  • preparing and maintaining detailedrecords and / orreports
  • analyzing details and applying deductive reasoning to investigations

Ability to :

  • understand and retain information regarding laws, ordinances, rules and regulations
  • learn first aid methods
  • interact with the public in a professional manner

Working conditions :

Work occurs indoors and outdoors. Tasks require manual dexterity and ability to drive. Position requires accuracy, teamwork, and ability to interact with the public.

Must be able to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays at any location throughout Maricopa County.

SELECTION PROCEDURE :

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified.

Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

A background investigation is conducted on a current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on relevant experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.
