At St. Lawrence, we are a Catholic church making disciples of Jesus at the U of M by building transformative relationships and raising up leaders in the faith.
This role plays a vital part in creating a transformative environment through music, especially at our Sunday and Holy Day masses, where we seek to have joyful, orthodox, and spirit-filled liturgies.
By recruiting, nurturing, and developing the musical talent of parishioners and students, the Music Director helps foster community and relationships and draws us all into deeper prayer and relationship with God.
Qualifications
Specific Areas of Responsibility
- Oversees the musical needs of St. Lawrence, chooses hymnody for all Sunday liturgies and Feast Days, and is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of musical instruments and audio equipment.
- Recruit and nurture choral musicians and foster the stewardship of musical talent among our parishioners.
- Help choir members develop their musical gifts for worship and foster the choir as a small faith community.
- Recruit and form a schola choir.
- Create and maintain the schedule of cantors and pianists for all Masses with music.
- Recruit and train cantors.
- Rehearse and direct the choirs at the 8 : 00 a.m., 10 : 30 a.m., and 7 p.m. Sunday Liturgies and Feast Days.
- Assist engaged couples in choosing liturgically proper music for their weddings and assign a cantor and pianist to lead the music.
- Support families in choosing funeral Mass music and schedule cantors and pianists for the Funeral Mass.
- Meet as needed with the pastor and / or staff to plan liturgies.
- Assist the Business Administrator with the music budget.
- Attend staff meetings to foster a working relationship with the parish staff.
Position Specifications / Requirements :
- Background check completed
- Experience with choral direction and liturgical music
- Strong communication skills with children, families, and co-workers
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to recruit, train, and support college student and parishioner volunteers
- Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to changes
- Be a practicing Christian of good character and deep faith.
