Job Description

Summary : The College of Arts and Sciences at Queens University of Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Physics beginning August 15, 2024.

Although the search is open in regards to specialization, applicants with an interest in data analytics and / or engineering physics are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics seeks a teacher-scholar to join a collaborative department committed to inclusive and innovative undergraduate teaching.

The successful candidate will teach lecture and laboratory courses in general Physics and upper-level courses in areas such as Signal and Image Processing, BioPhotonics, Electronics, and Computer Programming.

There will also be opportunities to engage in scholarship, participate in service, and mentor students through advising and undergraduate research experiences all to enrich the academic life of the university.

Queens is pursuing a multidisciplinary data analytics initiative to strengthen students' quantitative skills, expand opportunities for students and faculty to engage in data science, and create community partnerships in the Charlotte area to use data to generate insights and solve problems.

The ability to contribute to this strategic initiative through any or all following is desirable : domain expertise, experience using statistical software and programming languages, discipline specific and general quantitative methods, and relevant experience creating similar high-impact educational opportunities.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Requirements :

  • A PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Evidence of or potential for high-quality teaching effectiveness
  • Commitment to cultivating learning environments that foster a sense of belonging for all students

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students in research activities and community engagement
  • Experience using technology-supported pedagogies and active learning to engage students with diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct primary research in area(s) of expertise

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation) require ability to

  • Remain in a stationary position, most of the time.

Work Conditions

  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to meet requirements of the position, including teaching night or weekend classes.
  • Must be able to work in office and classroom environment while having contact with faculty, students, staff, and parents on any given day.
  • Work has deadlines, interruptions, moderate volume and can be stressful.
