Job Summary
The Equipment and Tooling Engineer is responsible for the design / development, prototyping, documentation, and deployment of tools, fixtures, jigs, and equipment selection and mechanical integration.
Designs will be deployed to production facilities and / or R&D laboratories.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with R&D and Production engineers to lead the design of tools and equipment selection to accurately and repeatedly fabricate, assemble, and test our products using DFM / DFA principles
- Multitask on various projects while staying in sync with business priorities
- Convert proof of concepts into robust industrial solutions, balancing cost, quality and lead time
- Create detailed part, assembly drawings utilizing industry best practices and GD&T to fabricate, assemble and inspect
- Create cost efficient solutions by mixing custom designs and of the shelf components
- Responsible for complete lifecycle, from concept to fabrication, and commissioning
- Interface with tool makers, vendors and internal / external machine shops
- Incorporate creative solutions into the design to error proof and reduce assembly and / or maintenance time and risks
- Evaluate existing designs to provide continuous improvements suggestions
- Using industry standards, select, and specify optimal (performance, cost, quality, durability) material and finish for the application
- Design for operator usability and safety (ergonomics, guards, sensors, etc)
- Drive towards standardization of equipment, tools, and components between product lines
- Mechanically integrate (smart) sensors and actuators to enhance design of automatic equipment
- Other duties may be assigned
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Understanding of mechanisms and motion
- Create technical drawings for assemblies and components conforming to ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards
- Is able to think in 3D and quickly conceptualize ideas into CAD
- Familiar with fabrication equipment and their limitations / capabilities (CNC mills / lathes, laser / water jet cutting, presses)
- Must have experience using SolidWorks, or comparable software, to design components and assemblies (3D model & associated detailed drawings)
- Knowledge of plastics and metals and impact on design and fabrication
- Ability to complete multiple projects within time and budget
- Has demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment as well as an individual contributor
- Excellent conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving ability
- Ability to communicate technically both orally and in writing
- With minimal supervision, the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep understanding of mechanisms and motion
- Has created successful solutions in start-up environment, and scaled-up for commercialization
- Successfully incorporated test solutions for electromechanical / optical products
- Successful deployment of industrial solutions to assemble electromechanical / optical products
- SME in selection of materials for tools, fixtures, and jigs for specific applications
- Proficiency in working on manual and / or CNC mills and lathes
- CSWP (Certified Solidworks Professional)
Education
BSME or equivalent engineering degree required
Compensation : The anticipated range for this position is $106,000 - $158,000. Actual placement within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including but not limited to skills, education, and experience.
Physical requirements / Work Environment
This position primarily works in an office environment. It requires frequent sitting, standing and walking. Daily use of a computer and other computing and digital devices is required.
May stand for extended periods when facilitating meetings or walking in the facilities. Some local / international travel is necessary (up to 20%);
the ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid Driver’s license and passport is required.
