Job Description

Allied seeks experienced Quality Control Inspectors to join our team in McGregor. The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for ensuring the proper implementation of the QMS (Quality Management System).

The QC department implements a variety of processes and procedures to ensure quality steel fabrication processes and resulting products.

Principal areas of responsibility include visual inspection, dimensional control, traceability and document control. Quality Control positions report to the QC Manager.

Responsibilities

Inspection

Visually inspect in process and finished products, including structural steel beams, columns, plates, clips and other components, to ensure that they meet the necessary quality standards and project specifications.

This includes material surface conditions, pre and post application of paint finishes and shipment loading.

  • Visually inspect welds between steel parts, ensuring that QMS and referenced standards regarding welds are met. Identify non-conforming welds for re-work or further testing in accordance with the QMS.
  • When needed, use non-destructive testing techniques, such as liquid penetration testing, to identify any defects in the products.
  • Maintain logs and records of inspections and results with any corrections for use in the final QC report and Quality Dossier.
  • Ensure that all parts and assemblies have legible identification marks appropriate for each stage of production.
  • Ensure that the Inspection Test Plan is followed.

Dimensional Control

  • Use measuring tools, such as micrometers and tape measures, to ensure that products conform to fabrication parts and assemblies drawings and specifications.
  • Identify in accordance with the QMS all non-conforming items and mark clearly areas requiring rework or repair.
  • Ensure dimensional control processes consider production workflow expectations.

Traceability

  • Verify that the receipt of all materials meet procurement standards and expectations, and that mill certifications with heat numbers are correctly associated with the product, in accordance with QMS procedures.
  • Ensure that all parts and assemblies have legible identification marks appropriate for each stage of production.
  • Identify and / or discard materials not in compliance with the QMS.

Document Control

  • Scan, upload and / or otherwise input documents into the facility software programs.
  • Utilize mobile wireless devices and scanners to aid in the tracking of parts and completed products with respect to the QMS.
  • Ensure that all required machine and / or equipment station logs are available to operators. Collect and catalog all completed logs.
  • Distribute any approved drawing revisions to the various production stations in accordance with the QMS, collecting outdated versions.
  • Document inspection and QC activity results and communicate regularly any quality issues to management.
  • Maintain records of inspection results, including photographs, measurements, and other data, and prepare final QC reports and Quality Dossiers, as needed.

Quality Control

  • Ensure by observation, collaboration, and document verification that all equipment used in the fabrication process is in good working order and maintained according to maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure that all quality control tools, implements, devices, and instruments are properly calibrated in accordance with the QMS.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to identify opportunities for quality improvement.
  • Participate in regular meetings with production staff and management to inform on QC statuses, practices, procedures, and associated training.
  • Contribute to the QMS improvement efforts, including internal and external audits as they relate to certifications of various types.

Safety

  • Follow all safety protocols and ensure that the work area is safe for themselves and their colleagues.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Participate in scheduled safety meetings.

Qualifications

  • Education : 2 or 4 year technical degree in steel welding, welding technology, steel materials, or equivalent.
  • Experience : 4 years in quality control inspection and documentation, preferably in structural steel fabrication environments.

Experience with AISC, AWS, CWB certifications, and processes is a plus.

  • Technical Skills : Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics. Familiarity with quality control programs, processes, and procedures.
  • Knowledge : Understanding of various AISC steel fabrication processes, including cutting, drilling, and welding in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS).
  • Attention to Detail : Keen eye for detail and ability to ensure accuracy in all work activities. Driven toward high-quality results through compliance with a QMS.
  • Communication Skills : Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate effectively with colleagues and management.
  • Teamwork : Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve quality goals.
  • Certification : Professional certifications, such as those offered by the American Welding Society (AWS) or the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), are a plus.

Ability to obtain NDT certification Level 1, 2 or 3 within 6 months of successful employment.
