Job Summary

The Associate Director is housed in the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs. Reporting directly to the Director of OSSJA, the Associate Director is charged with managing and administering the adjudication of student sexual violence and harassment cases following investigation.

In addition, the Associate Director will participate in administering student conduct hearings and providing outreach education to the campus community as well as supporting the Associate Vice Chancellor or designee in the review of appeals for all cases (Sexual Violence, Social Misconduct, Academic Misconduct, and Registered Student Organization).

This position involves establishing and maintaining a culture of safety in alignment with law and campus policy.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of relevant work experience
  • Must have a strong understanding of Title IX and federal requirements for compliance, including Clery, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Broad understanding and application of policy to ensure student rights and responsibilities.
  • Strong written and verbal skills, adept at communicating with a variety of stakeholders in varied emotional states.
  • Intermediate computer skills with word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets and high degree of comfort in learning and using new technology / software.
  • Knowledge of student and identity development theories. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and cultural humility.
  • Understanding of social justice, the dynamics of power and privilege and social identities (e.g. sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, disability, religion, socioeconomic background, immigration status, size, and other identities).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, law, or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in various conflict resolution pathways such as restorative practices, mediation, conflict coaching, and problem-solving to resolve complex, multi-faceted, and often emotionally-charged disputes and assist parties to reach agreement.
  • Work experience in a higher education setting, preferably in student conduct / student discipline / conflict resolution, educating individuals about policy violations, consequences and strategies to improve behavior and seek assistance when necessary;

experience in investigating or adjudicating cases involving sexual violence and sexual harassment.

  • Significant knowledge of UC Policies and Title IX compliance and ability to explain policies to students, staff and faculty.
  • Skills to understand, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and apply campus discipline and grievance policies and procedures in accord with University policy and legal requirements, as well as state and federal laws pertaining to discipline, sexual violence and sexual harassment, privacy, discrimination, due process, and related fields.
  • Advising skills to counsel students about policy violations, consequences, and strategies to improve behavior and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Communication skills to listen and speak effectively about sensitive subjects to faculty, students, staff, and others, including interviewing skills to elicit and synthesize information.

Writing skills to accurately compose correspondence and reports with a high level of attention to detail under strict deadlines.

  • 10% - TRAINING, OUTREACH, ADVISING AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

Department Overview

The Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs supports the university's educational mission and serves the campus by upholding standards of conduct and the university and by assisting students in need.

OSSJA carries out its roles by administering a fair and effective disciplinary system, holding students for conduct standards, upholding student rights, and responding to student grievances.

OSSJA also carries out its roles by providing non-clinical case management of students in crisis or distress. This includes but is not limited to direct assistance to students, faculty and staff and the coordination and delivery of services for the campus' response to students of concern.
