Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is looking to hire on-call Veterinarians to join our team!
Multnomah County Animal Services has been recognized as one of the top performing shelters in the country for implementing innovative, progressive lifesaving programs for shelter animals and creating a safe, livable community for people and animals.
We are the primary agency responsible for lost pet care, animal abuse investigation, and animal rescue in Multnomah County, which consists of a large portion of the Portland metro area, including the City of Portland itself.
We also offer dog and cat licensing, lost and found pet services, and animal adoptions through our shelter in Troutdale, Oregon.

Specifically, we are looking for someone who :

- Has the ability to work calmly under pressure, demonstrating the ability to think clearly and quickly while providing direction to support staff to provide quality care
Responsibilities :
Duties in this role include, but are not limited to :
Providing Medical and Surgical Care
- Direct and Perform comprehensive medical services to all animals in shelter care, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medications, and treatments
- Perform surgeries on shelter animals, including spay / neuter surgeries, entropions, enucleations, mass removals, and amputations
- Perform dental procedures on shelter animals, including cleanings and extractions
Coordinating Shelter Medical Operations
- Analyze and review medical protocols and procedures in order to ensure alignment with best practices in shelter medicine, and formulate and implement recommendations in collaboration with the Animal Health Manager
- Continually improve the Animal Health program and ensure high-quality medical care and services for shelter animals, including animals in foster care
- Provide functional and technical supervision of activities within the animal health unit, including delegation of tasks to CVTs and Veterinary Assistants, and monitoring quality of work
- Focus on identification, treatment, and prevention of health concerns to support live dispositions of animals when possible
- Provide training to shelter staff and volunteers on medical topics, including but not limited to medications, vaccinations, herd health, infectious disease, and quarantines
Providing Internal and External Customer Service
- Use Effective communication with staff and volunteers in daily interactions
- Guide and train Certified Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and volunteers regarding medical treatments and protocols
- Communicate with members of the public regarding medical diagnoses, discharge instructions, and medical care
- Respond to inquiries from staff, volunteers, and members of the public in person, by telephone, and / or by email

Minimum Qualifications / Transferable Skills* :
- Bachelor's degree; AND
- Three (3) years of relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; AND
- License required to practice veterinary medicine as outlined by at the time of hire and maintenance of it throughout employment
Preferred Qualifications / Transferable Skills* :
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications / transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.

- Two (2) years of experience in veterinary practice; and either two (2) additional years of experience supervising animal health technicians and others in a veterinary clinic, or one (1) year of experience supervising animal health technicians in an animal shelter setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current principles and practices in both veterinary services and animal sheltering.
- Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations, including documentation and reporting of cruelty / neglect, or legal cases.
- Demonstrated experience in managing overall population / herd health in a shelter setting, including managing infectious disease outbreaks.
- Transferable skills : Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience (including the military) or life experience that are relevant for this position .
