The NJAC Fatherhood Initiative is searching for an enthusiastic, intelligent individual to join our team of parent education professionals working in fatherhood.

As a Case Manager you will provide program participants with interactive, engaging classroom instruction, specialized services, counseling and comprehensive case management to current as well as formerly-incarcerated men and their families, based on an understanding of parenting skills and healthy relationships, re-entry and transition process, family dynamics and the impact that separation and incarceration have on children and the family unit.

The Case Manager is responsible for implementing fatherhood programs, services, and referrals. This position is responsible for successfully identifying, and engaging Father(s) in activities that will contribute to improving life choices for their children and their self-sufficiency

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Responsible for participant recruitment and retention
  • Conduct participant intake interviews for fathers seeking services; collects demographic and other data for reporting purposes.
  • Coordinate programming schedule, location(s) guest presenters, instructional materials, and supplies.
  • Teach parenting and relationship classes fathers using prescribed curricula and methods
  • Provide individual counseling to fathers to increase participants’ adaptive coping; facilitate good familial communication and interactions and support family re-unification and strength
  • Plan participant-specific interventions that assist fathers to improve their parenting / partnership skills and grow / enhance relationships with their children and the children’s caregiver
  • Develop service plans based on fathers’ needs in relation to emotional and financial support of their family
  • Provide appropriate referrals and follow up to assist in achievement of service plan goals
  • Coordinate and implement special events, graduations and other activities for families and children
  • Receive and respond to routine requests for information
  • Actively support and observe participants in program participation, documenting progress and providing ongoing feedback to maintain self-awareness
  • Identify needs and implement changes in services as needed, in consultation with the Program Supervisor and funder
  • Act as a liaison with outside agencies, represent the program, and provide guidance to outside constituents (teachers, caregivers) in understanding and dealing with the child’s reaction to parental incarceration and criminal justice as appropriate
  • Prepare and submit all required reports, participant and class notes and data including visitation logs, in a timely fashion in nFORM and SecurManage
  • Establish contact with outside agencies to refer or obtain additional services for program participants
  • Achieving program goals as agreed
  • Practice effective techniques for father engagement; demonstrates and encourages father friendliness within the agency, and other community institutions.
  • Promote community awareness regarding the value of involved fathers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with clients / program participants
  • Experience in criminal justice and / or family services environments preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources and services
  • Ability to work with individuals of various backgrounds and cultures
  • Proven ability to maintain timely and accurate records / data for program reporting
  • Excellent technology proficiency (MS Office, MIS systems, remote platforms)
  • Bilingual English / Spanish a plus (not required)
  • Understanding of how intersecting systems of racial, gender, and class discrimination shape conditions for the fathers, children and families they serve
  • A desire to contribute to a workplace and profession which values collaboration, diversity, growth, and respect for all people.
  • Ability to communicate both orally an in writing with individuals for a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds, including professionals, on-professionals, and the general public, concerning a wide range of subjects and / or situations.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and child support court systems preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible traditional and nontraditional, including occasional evening and weekends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with partner agency staff and the general public.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of counseling principles and record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience working with person in crisis.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail is required

EDUCATION :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Sociology, Education, Psychology or a related field with two years of experience in case management, counseling or group facilitation; or
  • Five years of experience in the nonprofit, case management, counseling or group facilitation field with high risk populations, in lieu of bachelor's degree

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATION :

  • Successfully pass Criminal, Education, Substance Use Testing and Driver Background checks conducted by the Organization and Funder
  • Position is based in Hamilton, NJ, but will need to travel to Newark, Trenton, and New Brunswick 3-4 times week. Requires reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, good driving record and automobile insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and / or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
  • Must be able to travel to client locations.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, use hands and fingers, handle or feel object, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee occasionally sits in front of the computer.
