Summary : The cooperative extension service is seeking a dynamic individual to provide statewide leadership for extension educational programs in food and nutrition
Classification Summary :
Extension Specialists provide New Mexico's citizenry and communities with effective leadership and collaboration to foster economic, educational, and community development.
Classification Standard Duties :
Provide statewide leadership for the Extension educational programs in food and nutrition
Required Education, Experience, Certification / License, Equivalency
Ph.D., DCN, OHS, DSc, DPH, or Ed.D. (in hand by hire date) required in Human Nutrition or closely related field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proven ability to provide leadership and coordination in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating educational programs related to food and nutritional needs throughout the life cycle.
- Proven ability to interpret food and nutrition research findings and communicate to public and lay audiences.
- Training and / or experience in community food and nutrition.
- Ability to serve as a mentor for county agents and students.
- Proven ability to conduct research and evaluate projects.
- Proven ability to maintain positive relationships; to use oral and written communication skillfully; to work with people from varied ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including students.
- Proven ability to adapt to changing and wide-ranging technologies.
- Experience securing and managing grants.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide statewide leadership for Extension educational programs in food and nutrition.
- Provide support for programs in diabetes education and obesity prevention (including EFNEP and SNAP-Ed).
- Provide training for Extension faculty and staff on new and evidence-based food and nutrition information, effective non-formal educational processes, program implementation and program evaluation.
- Interpret current research findings and develop written and other media to support educational programs for adult and youth audiences in the areas of food and nutrition.
- Provide leadership and coordination with county agents in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating educational programs related to food and nutrition.
- Secure external grant or contract funding, manage grants as a Principal Investigator, and supervise grant staff.
- Collaborate with other state agencies in delivery of food and nutrition education.
- Promote CES programs within the state to meet the LEADS 2025 Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity goals prioritizing program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
- Foster collaborations and participate in activities and on research teams that support the work of the Center of Excellence in Food and Sustainable Agriculture (CESFAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Registered dietitian or registry eligible
- Working knowledge of the land-grant university mission.
- Bilingual English / Spanish
