The Keck School of Medicine of USC is recruiting an Academic Learning Specialist () to provide direct academic support to over Physician Assistant students and assist with providing academic support to approximately medical students.
This position will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Development and the director of the PA program. The position is % with the Physician Assistant Program and % with the MD program.
The Academic Learning Specialist (Student Programs Advisor III) designs and implements support services and enrichment programs for students in the Doctor of Medicine and Physician Assistant Studies programs at the Keck School of Medicine of USC (KSOM).
Areas of responsibility include coordinating the learning support program for medical students and PA students and works to ensure students are progressing in accordance with program benchmarks.
The Academic Learning Specialist develops, manages, implements, and monitors strategic study programs, to include mentoring and tutoring sessions for students, assesses the needs of all students regardless of risk and develops strategic study plans.
The Academic Learning Specialist meets with medical students and PA students to discuss individual learning strategies; provides service directly to students individually, in small groups, and within learning settings;
and recommends outside screening, testing or other indicated support services. The Academic Learning Specialist educates faculty, administration, and students about learning and teaching styles and strategies, develops, and facilitates learning workshops for KSOM students on test taking and study skills.
This position is part of the KSOM Medical Education office and Physician Assistant Studies Program supervised by the Director of Physician Assistant Studies Program and the Vice Dean of Medical Education and works closely with medical students, PA students, KSOM office of well-being, course directors, teaching faculty, and the Curriculum Office.
Specific Duties include :
- Design and coordinate programs that support student retention, academic success and individualized support throughout the medical school curriculum.
- Work with individual students to assess learning styles and individual strengths and weaknesses; prescribe individual academic work plans.
Formulate plans to help students perform more effectively.
- Ensure that students are aware of learning tools and resources provided by KSOM.
- Design and deliver programs focused on study and learning skills and critical thinking skills to support the academic success of KSOM students.
General areas of instruction include time management, knowledge organization, and test taking strategies.
- Work with appropriate individuals to assist in the development and management of student retention programs and provide a comprehensive plan for USMLE exams and NBME subject exam preparation also curriculum, EOR examinations PANCE exams.
- Manage overall tutorial and academic support services. Assist with the recruitment, training and supervision of tutors and assist with the development and administration of an evaluation of the services.
- Develop and implement systems for monitoring the academic progress of students. Provide statistical information, trends and reports to enhance programs and service delivery.
Work closely with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Assistant Dean for Student Development to ensure student success.
- Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA and keep accurate documentation of session, meetings, and other communication as appropriate.
- Collaborate with other departments within the Keck School of Medicine and across the University to provide comprehensive support to medical students.
- Serve as part of an overall student affairs team and perform other duties as needed.
