This position performs a wide variety of neurodiagnostic studies at the bedside of critically ill patients in surgery including, electroencephalogram (EEG), Evoked Potentials and specialized laboratory studies.

Assumes responsibility for orientating, training, and monitoring performance of junior EEG Technicians in the department.

Education

Required - Either an Associate's degree in a health care related field or higher from an accredited college or university or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited Neurodiagnostic (NDT) program.

Preferred - Registered through the Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation Board (ABRET).

Work Experience

Required - 3 years or more experience performing Neurodiagnostic procedures in a patient care environment.

Certifications

Required - Registered in EEG (R. EEG T.) through the Neurodiagnostic credentialing board ABRET.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Working knowledge of neuroanatomy and physiology, basic electronics and electrical safety, general knowledge of EEG instrumentation, pattern recognition and various medical and pharmacological conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of classroom and / or clinical training.
  • Ability to set priorities and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule, such as nights, weekends, extended shifts, etc.

Job Duties

  • Measures and accurately applies electrodes in a timely manner, according the international 10 - 20 System ensuring electrode impedances meet laboratory standards.
  • Writes a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient's record and family members to include seizure types, date of last seizure, other neurological symptoms and medications.
  • Performs EEG and Evoked Potential recordings according to the standards of the laboratory (routine, sleep, bedside, and electrocerebral silence recordings).
  • Recognizes artifact (patient or environmental). Documents, eliminates, or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.
  • Knowledge of proper actions to take during patient emergency situations and ensures patient safety at all times.
  • Reports critical test results to the interpreting physician and supervisor and documents.
  • Clearly and effectively explains test procedure to patient and family members present ensuring complete understanding and cooperation.
  • Uses basic infection control standards relating to patient and equipment including electrodes.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to : respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.

Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work : (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree;

or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and / or pulling of arm or leg controls; and / or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and / or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.

NOTE : The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.

The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and / or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases.

There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and / or disposal of contaminated waste.

The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
