About the Department of Internal Medicine
is home to 20 categorical residents per year, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine.
Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for this program.
In September 2021, Dell Med’s IM program deployed a resident staffed team to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin (SMCA) Hospital.
SMCA is a full-service hospital with 24 / 7 emergency care and comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Center. SMCA also have a Level IV Trama Center.

About the Position
Associate Program Directors exemplify commitment to leadership in resident education and program administration to continuously improve the program and resident experience.
Working in tandem with and reporting to the Program Director (PD), the Associate Program Director (APD) will support the PD in the organization, implementation, accreditation, and supervision of the training program.
These duties will include but not be limited to : resident selection, orientation, evaluation, and remediation; curriculum development;
program evaluation, accreditation, and improvement; supervision and mentoring of Internal Medicine residents and chief residents.
Many of these duties are shared with their co-APDs, the ambulatory-focused APD and inpatient-focused APD. The APD is expected to role model outstanding clinical care, including, but not limited to, caring for patients and supervising residents in hospitalized settings.
The APD will have 30% (0.3FTE) protected time to support their role.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
- Create a positive learning climate and role model professionalism and clinical excellence
- Advance program mission and values
- Participate in the evaluation of the residents and decisions related to their advancement in the training program following Milestones 2.
0 through the Clinical Competency Committee
- Assist the PD in all aspects of compliance and accreditation through the ACGME
- Supporting the PD, implement policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements for resident duty hours and the working environment, including moonlighting
- Comply with Dell Med and Ascension’s written policies and procedures
- Maintain ABIM certification
SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE ROLE :
Program Administration & Education
- Attend weekly Program Leadership and Chief Resident meetings
- Attend monthly IM Med Ed Leadership meetings
- Attend structured educational activities (Morning Report and noon conferences) at least weekly
- Participate in IM Department conferences including Grand Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality
- Lead additional didactic, including : Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality, Academic Half Day
- Serve on the Clinical Competency Committee
- Review and revise curriculum and evaluation documents and process
- Plan and participate in program retreats (April or May yearly) and participate in the annual program reviews (summer)
- Perform 6-month evaluations for one class of residents as directed
- Review ERAS applications for interviews in September and October
- Interview as many applicants as able with a goal at least 60 interviews-15 half days
- Participate in orientation in June to welcome and prepare new interns
- Intervene as necessary to scheduling concerns or resident issues brought to your attention by the Chief Residents
- Direct select resident electives, including precepting Medical Education Elective, as resident elective schedules allow
- Participate in planning and implementing resident wellness activities
Program Mentorship & Scholarship :
- Mentor at least 3 residents with quarterly meetings, and ad hoc meetings as necessary
- Aid in selection of chief residents and mentor one yearly through monthly meetings
- Participate in resident scholarship with a goal of 2 scholarly products per year-posters, abstracts, papers, or presentations
- Support residents attending Texas regional ACP or Southern SGIM
- Submit workshop proposals to one organization, or other forms of scholarship, at least every other year
- Participate annually in academic societies and in educational programs designed to enhance their educational and administrative skills, especially APDIM / AAIM or ACGME
Qualifications
- Medical degree from an accredited medical school;
- Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment);
- Current Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine;
- Demonstrated leadership, clinical teaching, and evaluation and communication skills;
- A track record of being able to lead, direct and influence a team (regardless of reporting lines). Demonstrates behaviors of a team player;
- Eligible for appointment as an Assistant, Associate or full Professor rank in the Department of Internal Medicine at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
