About the Department

The mission of the Animal Resources Center (ARC) is to assist investigators in performing their animal research while ensuring appropriate and humane care of all laboratory animals.

The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Chicago is responsible for the use and care of all research animals on campus.

The ARC manages 6 facilities and a business office. Its sections are as follows : husbandry, maintenance, operations, veterinary care, finance and administration.

The unit merged with the Office of Shared Research Facilities managing all of the BSD cores on campus.

Job Summary

Under minimal supervision from the Director of Rodent Clinical Services, responsible for post-approval monitoring rounds, surgery observations.

Coordinates animal compliance issues and protocol congruency for special services procedure requests from investigators.

Involved in the development of a training program, standard operating procedure (SOP) evaluation and monitoring. Act as co-lead for the development and implementation of good laboratory practice (GLP) studies.

Participates in the animal welfare and enrichment committee meetings and assists with the development of new ideas and concepts for the well-being of research animals.

Responsibilities

  • Performs post-approval monitoring on rodent and exotics colonies, includes rounds of each room on a regular basis.
  • Checks on various items, i.e. non-standard care, tumor, post-procedure cards, etc., to ensure animal well-being and monitors protocol compliance and availability of non-standard items.
  • Observes PI performed procedures and surgeries to ensure animal welfare, protocol compliance, and aseptic technique.
  • Works closely with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to address and resolve potential investigator compliance issues.
  • Performs facility rounds, ensuring program Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines are followed, including satellite facilities.
  • Co-leads Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) studies, provides guidance and training with rodent technical procedures and ensures required documentation is completed and verified.
  • Provides animal care and uses protocol verification for special services procedures, ensuring that investigators are approved for special techniques.
  • Participates in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), assists with resolution of facility inspection findings by providing guidance to investigators with action plans and corrections.
  • Responsible for the development and teaching of training including hands-on technique training and aseptic surgical procedure for investigators.
  • Involved with the development of new training and reviewing / updating of current training.
  • Assists with the evaluation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensuring regular review of the program.
  • Coordinates continuing education opportunities for staff, provides options and / or guidance for career advancement or professional growth within the laboratory animal science field.
  • Plans own resources and training on various methods and techniques related to molecular-based genetic tests to new laboratory technologists, rotating residents, clinical fellows, researchers, and others.
  • Prepares quality and safety control measures for the laboratory, such as checks of equipment, temperature control, and documentation of quality improvement projects.

Under a moderate degree of supervision, provides support to clinical research studies.

Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience :

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications :

Preferred Qualifications

Education :

Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted.

Experience :

  • 2-4 years of experience with biomedical research environment.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a research animal setting.

Licenses and Certifications :

AALAS certification at LATg level.

Technical Skills or Knowledge :

Strong computer skills.

  • Interact and communicate effectively, oral and written, with faculty, investigators, administrators, staff and outside vendors.
